Taipei, A 3.7-magnitude earthquake hit the southern Taiwan county of Chiayi Wednesday, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, according to the Central Weather Bureau.
The temblor, which occurred at 5:30 p.m., was centered 20.1 kilometers east of Chiayi County Hall at a depth of 11.6 km, the bureau said.
The shallow earthquake was felt across the county and neighboring counties, with its highest intensity of 4 measured in Chiayi City on Taiwan's 7-tier intensity scale, followed by 3 in Yunlin County's Tuku Township and Changhua County's Tacheng Township.
An intensity of 2 was recorded in Yunlin County's Touliu City and 1 in Tainan's Tungshan Township and Nantou County's Mingchien Township, according to the bureau.
The scale of seismic intensity is a way of measuring or rating the effects of an earthquake at different sites.
