Good news for AIDS patients! Taiwan Organ Registry and Sharing Centre reached a consensus with multiple medical experts and doctors in regards to include AIDS patients on the waitlist for organ transplant. Ministry of Health has received the related documents and the Department of Medical Affairs has agreed to push for law amendments thus the modification will be carried out around the end of 2015.
During the meeting, the rules and regulations for AIDS patients who receive organ transplant were discussed as well. The experts said the organ transplant waitlist will only open to AIDS patients whose illness is under control. At the moment, patients with AIDS, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or other uncontrollable infectious diseases cannot donate nor receive organ transplants.
Jen-Hsiang Chuang, the deputy director-general for Centers for Disease Control, said they have completed a draft bill and it will be submitted to the Legislative Yuan shortly.
