Jun 01, 2017 General Comments Off on American Jesuit missionary to be buried in Taiwan, not America
Taipei--Father George Martinson, an American Jesuit missionary who passed away early Wednesday after having lived and worked in Taiwan for 50 years, will be buried in Changhua, central Taiwan, instead of his native America, according to the Society of Jesus staff Thursday.
Earlier reports said Martinson, who was granted Taiwanese citizenship posthumously, will be buried in the cemetery of Fu Jen Catholic University's Faculty of Theology of St. Robert Bellarmine in New Taipei City.
But a staff member of the Society of Jesus, Lee Yu-jung (???) said Thursday he will be buried at the cemetery of Catholic Chingshan Spirituality Center in Changhua City.
Father George Martinson's brother, Barry, also a Catholic father working in Taiwan, confirmed that his brother, now a Taiwanese, had chosen to rest in peace in Taiwan instead of his native America.
President Tsai Ing-wen (???) said in a message in memory of Father Martinson that he was a bona fide Taiwanese who dedicated decades of his life to the country and deserves "our respect and gratitude."
