During the post-City Executive Meeting press event on July 1, Mayor Hau Lung-bin announced that the Department of Social Welfare (DOSW) is now accepting applications for the 2014 computer subsidy program for low-income households.
Hau noted that the capital has endeavored to provide citizens with a more convenient digital life. The Taipei Wi-fi service is an example of one of the projects which have received positive appraisal from international media.
However, the mayor acknowledged the existence of the digital gap, especially when disadvantaged groups are faced with the challenge of a growing number of public / private services accessible only through internet connection.
Over the past twelve years, the program has benefited 5,700 families and over 10,000 students through the collaboration with private computer retailers and internet service providers. This year, an estimated 1,000 households will become beneficiaries of the program. Hau also encouraged parents to bring their kids to attend the city’s free IT education classes.
Taking the opportunity to thank partnering businesses which are committed to their social responsibility, the mayor calls out for more corporations to join the meaningful cause and help bridge the digital gap.
