Authorities are taking measures to ease the anticipated traffic congestion in Xinzhuang District in New Taipei this weekend when Costco Wholesale Taiwan opens a branch there.
The new outlet, to open Saturday, will be the 13th Costco store in Taiwan since the American membership-only wholesale club first gained a presence in the country in 1997.
To prevent a traffic jam in the vicinity of the new branch, the New Taipei City Transportation Department said it has asked Costco to cancel its original plan to offer free breakfast and gifts to members on its opening day.
Costco has said it will offer discounts to members instead.
The parking lot of the new branch will also be closed from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday in anticipation of long lines and hours of waiting time, transport officials said, and they urged consumers to take shuttle buses to the store.
Shuttle bus services will be offered at Fu Jen University, the Xinzhuang and Fuzhong MRT stations, and the Shulin Railway Station, Costco Taiwan said.
Police will step up enforcement of illegal parking and loitering, officials said.
