Taipei--Cambodian authorities have arrested seven Taiwanese nationals for suspected involvement in telecom fraud and is likely to deport them to China, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.
The seven Taiwanese nationals were among 31 telecom suspects arrested by Cambodian police a day earlier in a raid in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, the ministry said.
As Taiwan does not have a representative office in Cambodia, the ministry said the news of the arrests was relayed to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by Cambodian immigration officials.
Since China provided the intelligence that led to the arrests, the seven Taiwanese suspects are likely to be forcibly deported to China, according to the ministry.
The ministry said its office in Ho Chi Minh City will cooperate with Cambodia over the fraud investigation and will try to get the Taiwanese suspects repatriated to Taiwan to face justice at home.
The office has already sent personnel to Cambodia to identify the Taiwanese suspects, according to the ministry.
The rest of the 31 suspects are believed to be Chinese nationals.
