Nov 17, 2017 Business & Finance Comments Off on Chinese scholars mysteriously absent from Taipei forum
Two Chinese academics were absent from the symposium addressed by Katherine Chang on Friday under mysterious circumstances.
Sheng Jiuyuan of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and Zhu Lei of Nankai University in Tianjin were scheduled to attend and had arrived in Taiwan. However, they pulled out of the forum at short notice. Mainland Affairs Council spokesperson Chiu Chui-cheng said it appeared the two scholars had been told not to attend.
"The event organizer said the two Chinese academics who were preparing to attend received a message while they were setting out for the venue saying they could not take part. As for the real reason, the organizer was only able to tell us this much. But our position [on academic exchanges] remains the same one of respect, understanding and normality. We continue to welcome mainland Chinese scholars to come to Taiwan for academic exchanges," said Chiu.
Sheng Jiuyuan was scheduled to be the main speaker on a session dealing with cross-strait trade and the prospects for Taiwanese investment. Zhu Lei was scheduled to take part in a discussion on cross-strait competition and cooperation.
