Chou to lead Taiwan badminton teams at Sudirman, Thomas cups

Taiwan’s top male badminton player Chou Tien-chen (???) will lead the national team at two upcoming major international events to be held in late September and October, namely the Sudirman Cup and Thomas & Uber Cup, the nation’s badminton association said Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Wang Chi-lin (???) and Lee Yang (??), who won gold in the men’s doubles at the Tokyo Olympics, and Taiwan men’s singles No. 2 Wang Tzu-wei (???), will only play in the Thomas & Uber Cup, scheduled in Denmark from Oct. 9-17, according to the Chinese Taipei Badminton Association (CTBA).

World No. 1 female player and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Tai Tzu-ying (???), will not take part in either event.

Instead, Pai Yu-Po (???), another top female shuttler from Taiwan will play in the women’s singles event at this year’s Thomas & Uber Cup, according to CTBA.

Other Taiwanese shuttlers scheduled to take part in the Sudirman and/or Thomas & Uber Cup include men’s doubles pairings Lu Ching-yao (???) and Yang Po-han (???); Lee Jhe-huei (???) and Yang Po-Hsuan (???); and women’s doubles duo Hsu Ya-chiing (???) and Hu Ling-fang (???), it added.

The Sudirman Cup is the world mixed team badminton championship and takes place every two years. The 2021 edition is being held in Finland from Sept. 26 to Oct. 3.

The cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia.

Meanwhile, the Thomas & Uber Cup, is the biennial international badminton championship contested by men’s and women’s national teams.
