A cold front arrived to bring the chilliest temperatures of the winter overnight on Thursday to Friday. Tamsui, north of Taipei, saw the coldest temperatures, getting down to six degrees Celsius.
Taiwan has a mainly subtropical climate and winter temperatures generally remain in the mid-teens Celsius. But the Central Weather Bureau has warned the current cold spell is set to last for the weekend.
The bureau also said wind chill in coastal areas of western central Taiwan would bring the temperature down to a couple of degrees above freezing.
The cold front is expected to have passed by Monday, however. Temperatures are predicted to rise back to the high teens and even low twenties Celsius across the country.
