Cool weather on Tuesday, 10 degrees forecast for Lunar New Year

Temperatures across Taiwan on Tuesday will hit highs of 19-27 degrees and lows of 16-19 degrees as approaching northeasterly winds affect the island’s weather, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

The moist cold air front moving east toward Taiwan will bring brief showers to northern and eastern Taiwan and cloudy skies with occasional rain in central and southern Taiwan, the CWB forecast.

Temperatures hit near freezing levels in mountainous areas, and snow fell on 3,952-meter Jade Mountain, Taiwan’s highest peak, from 6:30 a.m. to 7 a.m. Tuesday, according to a local weather stations.

It began to fall again between 7:25 a.m. and 8 a.m., accumulating one centimeter of snow on the ground, the bureau said.

Meanwhile, Wu Der-rong (???), a meteorologist and adjunct associate professor of atmospheric sciences at National Central University, forecast that the weather will get better on Wednesday and Thursday.

A moisture system from the south will then approach Taiwan on Friday and quickly pass through Saturday, bringing rain and sending the mercury down nationwide, Wu said.

On Sunday, a strong cold and dry air mass will come close to Taiwan and be at its coldest early on Jan. 31, which is Lunar New Year’s Eve, with lows of 10 degrees expected in low-lying areas in Taiwan, Wu forecast.

On the Feb. 1 Lunar New Year’s Day, temperatures will rise throughout Taiwan during the day before another cold front approaches the island at night, he said.
