Taiwan on Sunday reported 43,307 new cases of COVID-19 and 62 deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
The deceased ranged in age from their 50s to their 90s. All but two of them had underlying health issues, and 26 were unvaccinated against COVID-19, the CECC said.
Also on Sunday, the CECC reported 56 cases that were newly classified as severe and 98 as moderate.
Of the 6,454,857 domestically transmitted cases recorded in Taiwan this year, 12,108 have been classified as severe infections and 16,233 as moderate, accounting for 0.19 percent and 0.25 percent of the total, respectively, according to CECC data as of Oct. 1.
Regional breakdown
Regionally, New Taipei reported the highest number of new cases on Sunday, with 8,789, followed by Taichung with 5,475 and Taipei with 4,848.
Taoyuan recorded 4,661 cases, Kaohsiung 3,932, Tainan 3,025, Changhua 2,337, Hsinchu County 1,217, Yilan 1,131, Pingtung 1,109, Hsinchu City 1,056, Miaoli 1,009 and Yunlin 889.
Keelung had 767 cases, Chiayi County 750, Nantou 652, Hualien 562, Chiayi City 424, Taitung 358, Kinmen 131, Penghu 99 and the Matsu Islands 20, the CECC said.
To date, Taiwan has recorded 6,547,708 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 34,972 imported infections.
With the 62 deaths reported Sunday, the number of COVID-19 fatalities in the country rose to 11,163.
