CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports 6 new COVID-19 cases, no deaths

Taiwan reported six new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, all contracted overseas, and no deaths from the disease, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).

The six imported cases include four Taiwanese nationals — two men and two women aged between their 20s and 60s — who recently returned from the United Kingdom, Thailand, United States, and Myanmar, a Russian in his 20s traveling from his country, and an Indonesian in his 40s.

They arrived in Taiwan between Oct. 17 and Oct. 30, and tested positive for COVID-19 either upon arrival or during their mandatory 14-day quarantine, except the Indonesian, the CECC said in a statement.

The Indonesian was working on a ship, which docked in Taiwan on Oct. 29, with the man taken to a hospital for a COVID-19 test the following day, the CECC noted.

Two of the Taiwanese patients were confirmed to have been infected with the coronavirus — one in the U.K. in June, and the other in August in Thailand, according to the CECC.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remains at 847, said the CECC, which announced on Oct. 23 that it will stop holding a press briefing on Sundays unless there are new locally acquired cases or developments in the COVID-19 situation in Taiwan to report.

With Sunday’s new cases, Taiwan has recorded a total of 181 imported cases, eight domestic cases, and five deaths linked to the disease in October, compared to September’s 174 imported cases, 53 local cases, and seven deaths, CECC data showed.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 16,412 COVID-19 cases, of which 14,425 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day, CECC data showed.

Since Aug. 15, however, the daily number of domestic cases has fallen to mostly single digits, totaling 122, while the country’s total number of imported cases has risen by 469 during the same period to 1,769, according to CECC data.
