Local cosmetic manufacturers will be banned from using animals to test the safety of the ingredients and raw materials used in their products under an amendment to the Statute for Control of Cosmetic Hygiene that cleared the Legislative Yuan on Friday.
Those who violate the stipulation will be fined up to NT$150,000 (US$4,731) and the products destroyed. Serious or repeat violators will be ordered to shut down their businesses and their registration will be wholly or partially revoked.
But a three-year grace period will be given to the manufacturers to give them time to find alternatives to using animals.
Each year, 115 million animals are used in experiments globally, which lawmakers said was quite inhumane.
