Taipei, Former Premier Yu Shyi-kun left Taiwan Monday at the head of a Taiwanese delegation to attend the inauguration ceremony of United States President-elect Donal Trump scheduled for Friday in Washington, D.C.
Yu is a senior Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member who served as premier and secretary-general of the Presidential Office under the DPP administration of former president Chen Shui-bian, who served two terms from 2000 to 2008.
Delegation members include Taichung Mayor Lin Chia-lung, Chiayi County Magistrate Chang Kua-kwan and Tung Chen-yuan, an advisor to the National Security Council. Yu's wife, Yang Bao-yu, is also on the delegation.
Other members of the Taiwanese delegation include lawmakers Chen Ting-fei of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party; Ko Chih-en, Lu Yu-ling and Lin Wei-chou of main opposition Kuomintang; Freddy Lim of the New Power Party and Chen Yi-chieh of the People First Party.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said the cross-party delegation was a response to the goodwill of the U.S. in sending a delegation, led by former US trade representative Ron Kirk, to congratulate President Tsai Ing-wen on her inauguration in May last year.
The government is sending the delegation also to show the importance it attaches to the close and friendly relationship between the governments and peoples of the two countries, according to MOFA.
Before returning to Taiwan Jan. 23, Yu and company will also meet with U.S. politicians, think tanks and Taiwanese expatriates, according to MOFA. (Courtesy of CNA)
