Sep 03, 2019 General Comments Off on Ferry services between Taitung, Green Island and Lanyu suspended
Taipei-Ferry services to outlying Green Island and Lanyu were suspended as of noon Tuesday, with the outer reaches of Tropical Storm Lingling expected to bring rain to eastern and southern Taiwan later in the evening.
Chung Yi-chang (???), a coast guard official based in Taitung, told CNA that roughly 2,000 people were ferried back to Taiwan proper from the two offshore islands in the morning.
Ferry services to Green Island will resume Thursday, while ferries between Taitung and Lanyu (Orchid Island) are expected to return to normal on Wednesday, Chung said.
According to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB), there is little chance of the tropical storm making landfall in Taiwan.
As of 2 p.m., the storm was located 347 kilometers southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip Eluanbi, moving in a north-northeasterly direction at a speed of 12 kilometers per hour, the CWB said.
The storm was carrying maximum winds of 30 meters per second with gusts of up to 38 meters per second, the CWB data showed.
On its current path, the storm is likely to pass closest to eastern Taiwan on Wednesday and Thursday, bringing rain to the country, especially eastern and southern areas, the bureau noted.
