Taipei--The Fifth Global International Studies Conference opened in Taipei on Saturday with some 450 scholars expected to present some 600 papers during the three-day meeting organized by the Taiwan Association of International Relations (TAIR).
The triennial conference, authorized by the World International Studies Committee (WISC), will focus on the theme "Dialogue Across Borders in Turbulent Times: Addressing Global Challenges."
It is the first time that the WISC has held its conference outside Europe, as well as the first time that TAIR has hosted a global international studies conference.
Starting in 2005, the previous four WISC conferences were held in Istanbul (Turkey), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Porto (Portugal), and Frankfurt (Germany).
The hosting of the conference will allow international relations scholars to increase their understanding of Taiwan and the wider region, and help international relations researchers in Taiwan strengthen contacts with global international studies research groups, TAIR head Philip Yang (???) said.
Representing a network of national and regional professional associations in the academic field of international studies, the WISC currently has 28 member organizations from more than 20 countries, covering Europe, the Americas, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.
TAIR formally became a member of the WISC in 2014.
