Vice President Chen Chien-jen (???) reiterated on Wednesday that Taiwan's government will work closely with the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and spare no effort to support Taipei City government when it hosts the 2017 Summer Universiade, to ensure it is the most successful Universiade ever.
In a meeting with FISU President Oleg Matytsin and members of the FISU Executive Committee at the Presidential Office, Chen said the government attaches great importance to the holding of the Universiade in Taipei from Aug. 19-30 next year, and has worked to ensure Taipei is prepared ever since the nation's capital won the right to organize the global university sports games in 2011.
The vice president also expressed his gratitude to FISU for the support it extended to Taipei in hosting the biennial international event.
Matytsin and the FISU delegation are visiting to Taiwan to inspect the sports facilities to be used for the Universiade. which some consider the second largest multiple sport international games, second only to the Olympics.
The Universiade Taipei 2017 will consist of 11 sports and 14 disciplines, with the host country able to add up to three events of its own choosing. The sports featured will include athletics, aquatics, gymnastics, weightlifting, archery, badminton, baseball, football, golf, basketball, tennis, table tennis, roller skating, volleyball, billiards, judo, taekwondo and wushu (martial arts).
About 12,000 athletes from 150 countries are scheduled to participate in the Games.
