Taipei, With the economy improving, about 96 percent of employees expressed a willingness to change jobs, believing it would not take long to find a better position, a survey released by 1111 online job bank showed Tuesday.
The figure was the second highest in four years after 97 percent expressed the same sentiment in 2016, the job bank said.
Daniel Lee (???), head of 1111 job bank's career development and public relations division, said the improving economy has reinforced employees' belief it would be relatively easy to find a better paid job.
The local job market has improved as the economy has recovered with the jobless rate falling 0.03 percentage points in January from a month earlier to 3.63 percent, the lowest since May 2015, when it was 3.62 percent.
Last month, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) upgraded its forecast for 2018 gross domestic product growth to 2.42 percent, from an earlier estimate of 2.29 percent in November, on the back of solid global demand.
Among respondents who are considering quitting to look for a better job, 69.7 percent said they have already started looking and sent out resumes after the six-day Lunar New Year holiday which ended on Feb. 20.
A total of 8.6 percent said they have secured a new job, while 17.9 percent said they are still observing the job market but have not taken any concrete action, the survey found.
About 42.9 percent of those who would like a new job said they are looking for higher wages, 31.8 percent said they face a bottleneck in career development if they stay at the same company and 26.7 percent simply want a different type of job.
When asked about salary, almost 40 percent of respondents said they are not happy with their current pay and 55.2 percent indicated that although their current pay is acceptable a higher wage would be better.
According to the DGBAS, the average monthly wage made up of regular and non-regular pay, such as overtime pay, stood at NT$49,989 (US$1,760) in 2017, the highest ever, up 2.46 percent from a year earlier, on the back of the economic recovery.
The survey, conducted from Feb. 21 to March 5, collected 1,092 valid questionnaires with a confidence level of 95 percent and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.97 percentage points, the job bank said.
