Typhoon Goni batters Okinawa
Typhoon Goni lashed the southern Japanese islands of Okinawa with heavy rains and winds on Monday, as the death toll rose to 19 in the northern Philippines. Wind gusts of 256 kph, a local record, flipped over cars and toppled utility poles overnight on the remote Japanese island of Ishigaki, near Taiwan, Japanese media reported.
UN head visits site of attack
UN chief Ban Ki-moon laid a wreath in the capital of conflict-hit Nigeria on Monday to commemorate the fourth anniversary of a deadly attack on the global body by Boko Haram. The secretary-general hugged several relatives of the victims of the bombing during a ceremony at United Nations House. At least 21 people died when a bomb-laden car exploded at UN House on Aug 26, 2011.
Indian jet crashes in paddy field
An Indian air force MiG-21 crashed on Monday in India-controlled Kashmir, officials said. According to officials, both the pilot and a co-pilot on board managed to eject safely before the jet crashed in a paddy field about 14 km south of Srinagar.
Air show deaths may near 20
The death toll after a jet plane plowed into a busy road in southern England while performing at an air show could approach 20, police said on Monday, as Britain began reviewing its safety procedures for such events. A vintage Hawker Hunter fighter jet struck several cars on Saturday on the major road next to the Shoreham airport near Brighton.
Former leader back in prison
Maldives authorities have put former president Mohamed Nasheed back in prison, one month after his 13-year prison sentence was commuted to house arrest, his party said Monday. The Maldivian Democratic Party said Nasheed was taken to the high-security prison island of Maafushi on Sunday night.
