More and more migrant workers are coming to Taiwan. The percentage increase of these foreign workers who work as domestic caretakers has gone up three times more than the figure from the year before. That's the word from the labor ministry.
In Taiwan, the number of migrant workers has increased to over 620,000 at the end of last year. Among them, more than 37% work as domestic caregivers and about 62% in industry-related fields.
Scholars link the rapid rise to the relaxed rules introduced in August 2015 that allow those aged 85 or over to hire foreign caretakers. But the labor ministry said more studies are needed to understand the issue.
