Dec 11, 2018 General Comments Off on Man arrested for making online threat of ‘war’ against Taiwan
Taipei, Dec. 11 (CNA) A man who threatened on Facebook to wage war against Taiwan then flee the country has been arrested and is under investigation by prosecutors, aviation police said Tuesday.
The Aviation Police Bureau said it received a tip-off Monday that the man, surnamed Chang, had made a post in a closed Facebook group, saying that he planned to "start a war against the whole of Taiwan" and already had a plane ticket to get out of the country.
The informant said Chang probably had explosives and modified firearms and that he planned to flee Taiwan on a flight Monday or Tuesday, according to police.
After receiving the information, the police informed other relevant authorities and advised on increased safety alerts at the country's airports, the bureau said.
The man was asked to report to the police after he was identified as a Facebook user, carrying the name "Chang Shao-chung (???)," who lived in Taipei's Songshan District, the bureau said.
When Chang reported to the police, he denied that he had posted the message online but agreed to a police search of his residence, the bureau said.
Police did not find any explosives or firearms at his home but established that he had indeed posted messages in a closed Facebook, threatening public safety, the bureau said.
The case has been turned over to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation of accusations of threatening and endangering public safety, the bureau said.
