The defense ministry says it has a handle on the movement of China's aircraft carrier Liaoning, currently conducting open sea exercises off the southern Chinese island province of Hainan. Defense ministry spokesperson Chen Chung-chi was responding on Thursday to claims that the carrier will pass through the Taiwan Strait while President Tsai Ing-wen is away visiting Central America next week.
Chen said the military is closely monitoring the situation and that the communication line to the Presidential Office is clear in case of emergency. Chen said the public should not worry.
Director of the defense ministry's Defense Research Department, Wang Shao-hua, likewise said the military is well aware of the Liaoning and its capabilities.
"The aircraft carrier held its first exercise in 2014. Because it had its first time, we were able to have a complete grasp of its exercise procedures," Wang said. "The carrier did not have any fighter jets then in 2014. It was a cross-sea training then and likewise for this time. Basically, we have a handle on all of its activities."
The defense ministry said that the military is able to ensure national security if the carrier were to cross the middle line of the Taiwan Strait.
