Nearly 500 turkeys were culled in Chiayi on Saturday. That's because bird flu was suspected to be spreading in a turkey farm in Minxiong township after over 40 turkeys there died abnormally.
Local authorities went to the farm to inspect and transport the dead turkeys right after they were reported. The spread of the flu and fatalities among the turkeys were similar to other bird flu cases so the local health authorities decided to take action and cull them.
Chiayi's Livestock Disease Control Center said that they have culled more than 5,400 birds at seven poultry farms in Chiayi. The center is calling on people to watch for signs of bird flu during this avian flu epidemic.
