BARANGAY Ginebra San Miguel declined the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’s (SBP) invitation to be the fourth team in the MVP Cup.
But it’s not about business rivalry.
Kings Head Coach Tim Cone told the BusinessMirror on Tuesday that his team is not prepared to give the three nations, including the Gilas Pilipinas pool, a good workout in the pocket tournament scheduled from September 11 to 13.
And the San Miguel Corp. (SMC)-Manuel V. Pangilinan (MVP) rivalry is not the reason Ginebra refused to join Gilas, Chinese Taipei and the Wellington Saints of New Zealand in the competition.
No, and it’s unfair to say so, Cone said.
Gilas fans slammed the Kings in social media for turning down the SBP invitation, branding them as unpatriotic for not helping Gilas in its preparation for the International Basketball Federation (Fiba) Asia Men’s Championship in Changsa, China, from September 23 to October 3.
We just haven’t had enough practice. We wouldn’t be much competition for teams at this point. As I told Chot [Reyes], we’re not ready for prime yet. We’ve got a long way to go, Cone added.
Lebanon was supposed to be the fourth team in the MVP Cup but withdrew on the last minute without giving any reason to organizers. Talk ‘N Text took its spot in the mini-tournament.
The SMC group is being criticized for refusing to release its big stars to the Gilas pool, particularly June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer and LA Tenorio of Ginebra.
But SMC officials denied this and said they are not stopping their players from joining the pool. Fajardo cited a foot injury and Tenorio blamed fatigue.
The MVP Cup kicks off on Friday with Wellington Saints facing Chinese Taipei at 4:15 p.m. to be followed by game between Gilas and Talk ‘N Text at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, Talk ‘N Text faces the Taiwanese at 3 p.m., while Gilas battles Wellington Saints at 5 p.m. On Sunday Talk ‘N Text battles Wellington Saints at 3 p.m., and Gilas takes on Taiwan at 5 p.m.
All the games will be played at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
