The Pakistan Federation Baseball (PFB) has named a 19-member national squad for the 27th Asian Baseball Championship to be held in Taiwan from September 16 to 20. The squad was announced during a training camp, which is being organised by a Japanese coach Tomo Irokawa at the Punjab Stadium. The Asian Baseball Championship is the toughest continental event featuring all top six ranked countries of the region – Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Indonesia and Pakistan.
While acknowledging that it was the most demanding continental event, PFB executive director Fakhar Shah said Pakistan were well prepared under Irokawa’s coaching. He said Pakistan had attained sixth rank in Asia, terming it a big achievement within the limited resources the PFB had. Pakistan are in a strong position to beat China, one of the strong opponents, to improve the ranking to fifth, the official added.
Irokawa is a qualified coach, who is also running his own baseball club in Japan. Irokawa said the Pakistan players were very talented and he was surprised to see the fitness of the players. Though cricket is a very popular game in Pakistan, the physique and the potential of the Pakistan players could make them a world class baseball team. Irokawa said his club in Japan had the honour of producing four to five players for the junior ranked team of the country. Japan is No 1 in Asia in baseball with around 60,000 players at the junior level. Among such a heavy number, his club has contribution at the national level in the junior section. Irokawa will continue coaching till Sept 14. Then he with the Pakistan team will fly to Taiwan. Irokawa is confident of beating China in the Asian Championships.
