Parent of murdered Malaysian student calls for justice

The family of a deceased Malaysian university student arrived in Taiwan late Friday and has issued a call for justice to be served in the death of the young woman, who police said was apparently murdered.

The 24-year-old student, identified by her last name Chai (蔡), was found dead Thursday in her rented residence on Dadong Road in Taipei’s Shilin District, and she had injuries consistent with strangulation, police said.

The woman’s death was reported about 6 p.m. Thursday by her boyfriend, who was rushed to hospital from his home in New Taipei’s Yingge District, following an overdose of over-the-counter drugs, according to police.

They said the overdose was believed to have been a suicide attempt by Chai’s boyfriend, who is the main suspect in her death.

According to local media reports, the 30-year-old Taiwanese man surnamed Chen (陳) confessed to police, before he passed out from the drug overdose, that he had killed Chai.

Late Friday, Chai’s parents and two other family members arrived in Taiwan, and her father called for authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into his daughter’s death so that justice could be served.

According to the family, Chai was just two credits short of graduating from university in Taiwan.

Police said their initial investigation found that Chai had been working part-time as a model and as a live streamer on a social entertainment platform. In early October, she and Chen met via social media, police said.

Surveillance camera footage showed that Chen went to Chai’s apartment in Shilin at 5 p.m. on Oct. 12 and left around noon the next day to return to Yingge, where he lived alone, police said.

Following Chen’s overdose, he has regained consciousness and is currently in stable condition in hospital, police said, indicating that the suspect will soon be questioned about Chai’s death.

Meanwhile, an autopsy will be carried out Sunday to determine the exact cause of the student’s death, police said.
