Feb 16, 2017 Culture Comments Off on Premier Lin declares war on bird flu
Premier Lin Chuan has told government agencies to step up efforts to stop the spread of bird flu.
Lin said Thursday that the H5N6 strain of bird flu virus that recently appeared in Taiwan could potentially spread to humans. Lin said the government should therefore treat the fight against bird flu like a war.
The premier said all agencies should simplify preventative measures and put them in place as quickly as possible. He also told police, sanitation authorities, and local governments to investigate and punish improper disposal of bird carcasses or illegal slaughtering of poultry.
Lin said work to contain a serious outbreak in 2015 was hampered by poor security measures on poultry farms. Falsified veterinary certificates, and insufficient disinfection of trucks carrying poultry and feed were also to blame.
The premier called on the Council of Agriculture and local disease prevention units to examine their procedures and avoid similar missteps.
