President Tsai lauds ‘superhero’ moms on Mother’s Day

President Tsai Ing-wen (???) on Sunday praised mothers in Taiwan, saying they were “superheroes” in the eyes of their children, in a message issued on Mother’s Day.

In a social media post, Tsai said she had learned from her own mother just how difficult a task it was to raise children.

The president thanked all mothers in Taiwan for their sacrifices and commended them for overcoming the challenges they encounter on daily basis, which she said made them “superheroes” in the eyes of their children.

In recognition of the difficulties facing modern working families, the government has rolled out several initiatives to properly support mothers and families, Tsai said.

The measures include longer parental leave, higher maternity pay, more maternity benefits, and increased financial allowances for newborns, she said.

In addition, Tsai said, the government has been moving to improve maternity care, expand access to and assistance with fertility treatment, and provide better health services for pregnant women and new mothers.

Noting that many mothers take care of not only their children but also their parents, Tsai said the government was also working to strengthen its elderly care policies.
