Taipei--Passengers aboard a Puyuma express train traveling up Taiwan's east coast had to be evacuated after a cellphone battery exploded inside a passenger's suitcase, the Taiwan Railways Administration (TRA) said Monday.
The No. 445 train from Taitung to Shulin had to make an emergency evacuation at Nanping Station in Fenglin, south of Hualien City, after an explosion was heard at 8:12 p.m., the TRA said.
The explosion apparently filled a train car with smoke, and passengers were asked to move to another cabin until the train pulled into the nearest station for an emergency evacuation, it said.
Nobody was injured in the incident, the TRA said, adding that the case is being looked into to determine the owner of the suitcase in which the battery exploded.
