Taipei, The Central Weather Bureau (CWB) lifted the sea warning for Typhoon Mangkhut at 8:30 p.m. Saturday, but warned people living in mountainous areas of southern Pingtung County and eastern Taitung County to remain alert over extremely torrential rain and torrential rain, respectively, through Sunday.
As of 8 p.m., the typhoon was 260 kilometers southeast from Dongsha Islands (Pratas Islands) in the South China Sea, moving in a west-northwest direction at 28 kilometers per hour with maximum sustained winds of 173 kph and gusts of 209 kph, CWB data showed.
Due to Mangkhut's periphery, mountainous regions in Pingtung and Taitung counties will continue to see extremely torrential rain and torrential rain respectively until Sunday morning.
The weather bureau again reminded people in mountainous areas to take precautions against possible landslides, mudslides and falling rocks.
