Set to head home, Caribbean ambassador thanks Taiwan for its support

Jasmine Elise Huggins, whose tenure as St. Christopher and Nevis’ ambassador will soon come to end, thanked Taiwan on Friday for its years of support for her country.

During a meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文), Huggins described Taiwan as a friend and partner and thanked the people and government of Taiwan for their support to her nation and to her personally, without elaborating.

Huggins, who assumed the post of St. Christopher and Nevis ambassador to Taiwan in 2010, expressed the hope that the friendship between the two countries would continue to flourish long after her departure.

It remained unclear as of Friday when the ambassador would leave Taiwan and who would be her successor.

Huggins has been posted in Taiwan for more than 14 years. She first arrived in Taiwan in 2007 to help establish the Caribbean nation’s embassy in Taiwan the next year.

According to Huggins, bilateral cooperation between the two countries has spanned a range of fields and shared values and priorities over the years.

Tsai thanked Huggins and the government of the Caribbean ally for “long defending Taiwan’s international status and rights.”

She underlined the importance for democracies to come together and be united “in the face of unwarranted provocations by authoritarian forces.”

St. Christopher and Nevis and the Republic of China, Taiwan’s official name, established diplomatic relations in 1983. The Caribbean country is one of 14 states that still maintain such ties.
