Taipei has been listed as the 15th most favored destination city for international visitors for the first time this year and the average amount spent by tourists here exceeded the spending in neighboring Tokyo and Seoul, according to the latest "Global Destination Cities Index Report released by Mastercard.
The report showed that Taipei has set a new record on international visitor numbers with 7.35 million visitors this year, an increase of 500,000 more visitors compared to the same period last year.
That helped it rank 15th in the world for the first time this year and 7th in the competitive Asia-Pacific region, according to Mastercard.
The report projects international visitor volume and estimated spending in 2016 for 132 destination cities in the world.
In terms of visitors' spending, visitors to Taipei spent an average of US$1,306 during their visit, exceeding the amount spent by visitors to Tokyo (US$1,154) and Seoul (US$1,206), according to Mastercard.
The total international visitor expenditure in Taipei amounted to US$9.6 billion, which not only surpasses Hong Kong (US$6.8 billion), it is nearly twice the amount of Shanghai (US$5 billion), making it the leader of Greater China Region for the 6th consecutive year.
According to the Mastercard Global Destination Cities Index Report, Bangkok came out on top of the list with 21.47 million visitors, while London (19.88 million), Paris (18.03 million) and New York (12.75 million) followed in that order.
As for the amount spent by international visitors, Dubai improved drastically from ninth place last year to first place this year, with a total spending of US$31.3 billion, surpassing London (US$19.76 billion) greatly.
As for the categories of spending, the major categories of expenditure by visitors to Taipei include: shopping (33.9 percent), accommodation (32.7 percent) and dining (15 percent).
