Taipei (dpa) – Taiwan’s military on Thursday held an anti-amphibious
landing exercise designed to simulate an attempt by Chinese forces to
invade northern Taiwan, a news report said.
Although relations between the two countries are at their best in
more than 60 years, Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou said Taiwan
would not let its guard down, the state-run Central News Agency
China has claimed sovereignty over self-ruled Taiwan since 1949, when
it split from the mainland after a civil war.
Ma personally observed the live-fire military exercise, it said.
More than 300 shells were fired during the drill, which was held at a
military site in Hsinchu County and was jointly operated by the army,
navy and air force. The series of military exercises began on Monday.
In July, Chinese People’s Liberation Army soldiers were shown on
Beijing’s CCTV storming a computer-generated facsimile of the
Presidential Office in Taipei. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense
said the move hurt relations, calling it unacceptable, according to
the Taipei Times.
