Taiwan's representative office in Japan has protested new guidelines released by Japan's education ministry that call for schools to teach students that the Diaoyutai Islands are part of Japan.
The representative office said Wednesday that the islands are the territory of the Republic of China, using Taiwan's official name. The office said any attempt to impugn Taiwan's sovereignty over the islands will have no effect. At the same time, the office called on Tokyo to put aside the territorial dispute over the islands and work with Taiwan to jointly develop the area. It said that Japan and Taiwan should avoid letting the dispute impact the friendly ties the two sides share.
