Taipei, Taiwan is willing to expand cooperation with its diplomatic ally Kiribati, especially in the fishery industry, Legislative Speaker Su Jia-chyuan said Sunday on his Facebook page.
Su visited Kiribati from July 11 to 14 to attend the celebration of that country's 40th anniversary of independence from the United Kingdom as a special envoy representing President Tsai Ing-wen
In his Facebook post, Su said he visited the Taiwanese technical mission in the Pacific country to check the progress of a joint aquaculture project and attended a banquet hosted by President Taneti Maamau on the third day of his trip.
"I told President Maamau that Taiwan is willing to expand cooperation with Kiribati, especially in the area of fisheries," Su wrote.
"Members of my delegation who are in the fishery sector expressed their willingness to invest in Kiribati after learning about the local environment."
He also congratulated Kiribati on behalf of Tsai during the banquet, and wished the country prosperity under Maamau's leadership.
