Taiwan’s women’s national soccer team unveils new kits ahead of Asian Cup

Taiwan’s women’s national soccer team will take to the pitch at the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India early next year wearing a new kit designed around a motif of Formosan blue magpie, the emblem of the Chinese Taipei Football Association.

The new jerseys were showcased at a press conference in New Taipei Tuesday ahead of the Asian Cup, which will be held in the Indian cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune in Maharashtra from Jan. 20 to Feb. 6, 2022.

Taiwan booked its place in the finals for the first time since 2008, and will join Japan, Australia, China, Thailand, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Iran, Indonesia, Myanmar, and hosts India in duking in the AFC’s blue riband event.

Taiwan’s new home jersey, which was shown for the first time modeled by team captain Wang Hsiang-huei (???) at the press conference Tuesday, was designed around the theme of the Formosan blue magpie, according to designer Hsiao Ching-lun (???) from Plugin Branding and Visual Marketing Integration Co. Ltd.

“The blue magpie has a strong vitality, a strong ability to adapt, and adheres to the idea of mutual support, which is the spirit of our soccer team,” Hsiao said.

The blue jersey, which features short thin white streaks and red at the sleeves, also features imprinted feathers that mimic those of an actual blue magpie, Hsiao added.

“The white resembles hope while the red resembles enthusiasm, and along with blue, it is the classic colors of our national team,” Hsiao said.

Meanwhile, forward Lai Li-chin (???) showed off the away kit, an all-white number with a baby-blue collar.

“As we said earlier that white resembles hope, so we wish that all our players will be running on the pitch with hope,” Hsiao said.

CTFA Chairman Chiou I-jen (???) said he had big hopes for Taiwan’s women’s soccer team, saying that a good performance in the tournament would provide a boost to the team’s international ambitions, with the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup doubling as a qualifying tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Taiwan’s women’s soccer team are three-time Asian champions, winning the title in 1977, 1979 and 1981.
