President Tsai Ing-wen has met the president of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, on the third stop on her Central America trip.
Tsai expressed admiration for the Guatemalan people's bravery in their pursuit of freedom and democracy after a long civil war. Tsai said that Taiwan, like Guatemala, has known war and authoritarian rule. However, she said that Taiwan's people, too, have pursued freedom and democracy, and their love of peace has not changed.
Tsai said Taiwan will maintain the principle of mutual aid in its foreign relations. She said Taiwan hopes to deepen cooperation with allies like Guatemala on developing technology, agricultural technology, infrastructure, and tourism. Tsai said she also hopes to see more bilateral trade.
President Morales reiterated commitment to deepen and consolidate friendship and cooperation. Morales thanked Taiwan for its assistance in rebuilding the country's CA 9 highway and said he hopes Taiwan will continue supporting the project.
