Taipei (dpa) – Two people drowned in eastern Taiwan, as Typhoon
Soudelor was expected to bring strong winds and heavy rains to the
island Friday, a news report said.
On Thursday, a woman and three girls were swept out to sea off Yilan
county by heavy waves driven by the approaching storm, the Central
News Agency reported Friday, citing the Central Emergency Operation
The woman and one girl were confirmed killed, while another of the
girls, aged 8, was missing. The third girl was rescued.
The Central Weather Bureau said Soudelor was approaching from the
east with maximum sustained winds of 170 kilometres per hour (kph),
and gusts of over 200 kph.
President Ma Ying-jeou ordered local authorities to stop tourists and
local residents from visiting beaches on the island’s east coast, the
Central News Agency reported.
Some rail and domestic air travel was suspended.
About 2,000 tourists and residents were evacuated from islets off
eastern Taiwan late Thursday, the agency said.
The typhoon has weakened since earlier this week, when it was
recorded to be the most powerful tropical storm this year.
The eye of the storm, some 320 kilometres from Taiwan, was moving
west-north-west towards the island at a speed of 21 kilometres per
China’s Xinhua News Agency reported Friday that about 5,000 people in
southeast China’s Fujian Province have been evacuated, as Soudelor is
expected to hit the province on Saturday.
