Jul 30, 2017 Politics Comments Off on Typhoon Haitang could weaken into tropical depression
Taipei--Typhoon Haitang, which made landfall in southern Taiwan earlier in the day, was packing winds at slightly lower speeds in a bit smaller radius of maximum winds -- a trend that the Central Weather Bureau (CWB) said late Sunday could turn it into a tropical depression.
In a press release issued at 10:15 p.m., the CWB said Haitang, which was centered 70 km north-northeast of Kaohsiung and moving northwesterly, was threatening areas south of Chiayi, Nantou and Miaoli, including Hualien and Taitung.
Haitang was moving in a north-northwesterly direction at 24-16 kilometers per hour, packing sustained winds of 65 kph, with gusts of up to 90 kph in a radius of 80 km, according to the CWB.
The CWB warned that heavy to torrential rain could hit the mountainous areas of southern and eastern Taiwan as Haitang kept sweeping through the island.
