Taipei--The Taoyuan Flight Attendants Union (TFAU) said Sunday that its membership now includes more than half of Eva Airways' flight attendants, which makes it eligible to negotiate a collective agreement with the airline.
The union, which organized a strike against Taiwan's largest carrier China Airlines (CAL) last June, said 2,592 flight attendants of EVA Air have joined the union since last July, which means it can now negotiate on their behalf, in accordance with the Collective Agreement Act.
With the mediation of Taoyuan City Labor Department, the union said, it has been checking its membership list against EVA Air's records since Thursday to ensure that it has more than half of the airline's flight staff as members.
The union, however, accused EVA Air management of removing TFAU newsletters and other correspondence from the mailboxes of its members in the EVA building since last Thursday.
The TFAU said that was unlawful behavior under the Labor Union Act and was also unwise.
It was part of the old dictatorial management culture, the union said, adding that a new chapter was about to unfold in the relations between management and workers.
The TFAU said it will hold a press conference at 4:30 p.m. Monday, when it will complete the procedure for checking its member list.
