Bangkok--The torch for the 2017 Summer Universiade was passed to a Taiwanese athlete at a ceremony in Bangkok on Sunday, which hosted the third leg of the relay after the Italian city of Naples.
The torch, which was lit in Italy's Turin on June 20 at the start of its two-month relay, will make the final stop in Taipei for the opening ceremony of the 29th international multi-sport event for university athletes.
Chung Yung-feng (???), head of Taipei City's Department of Cultural Affairs, was at the relay event to accept the ceremonial torch from Thai torchbearers at Thammasat University's Rangsit campus, which was the venue of the 1998 Asian Games and 2007 Summer Universiade.
Chung then passed the torch to Taiwanese professional tennis player Lee Hsin-han (???).
In a speech at the ceremony, Chung said the Bangkok relay was an ideal place to promote the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei.
More than 500 students from Bangkok universities attended the relay ceremony on the Rangsit campus, which was the last stop in Thailand.
The torch will next pass through Daegu in South Korea before arriving at Taiwan on June 29.
It will be carried to Jade Mountain, Taiwan's highest peak at 3,952 meters, and then around Taiwan.
The 2017 Summer Universiade will take place Aug. 19-30.
