Yongkang Street in Taipei named 4th coolest street in the world

Yongkang Street in Taipei has been listed as the fourth coolest street in the world in 2022 by global magazine Time Out for the access it offers to a plethora of cuisines and artisanal memorabilia.

The listing, part of Time Out’s “33 coolest streets in the world” survey, described Yongkang Street as a one-of-a-kind location like no other in Taipei.

The street is a “mellow lane in the genteel Dongmen neighborhood packed with excellent restaurants, holes-in-the wall sizzling with traditional fried snacks, decadent dessert parlors, upmarket boutiques and historical tea rooms with all the ceremonial trappings,” the magazine said.

It also praised the street for choosing to house artisanal stores owned by small businesses instead of chain franchises, giving visitors the chance to purchase handmade items that are often unique instead of commercialized trinkets that are just a dime a dozen.

As with all other streets on the list, Time Out also provided readers with food and beverage recommendations for location.

It suggested visitors try out Smoothie House, one of the street’s staples known for its mango snowflake shaved ices, and Zhang Men Brewing, a craft brewery showcasing local ingredients.

The three locations ranked above Yongkang Street in the Time Out survey were Rue Wellington in Montreal at the top, followed by Gertrude Street in Melbourne and Great Western Road in Glasgow.

Immediately behind Yongkang Street was Værnedamsvej in Copenhagen in fifth.

Other choices in Asia were Tai Ping Shan Street in Hong Kong in seventh, Thailand’s Yaowarat Road in Bangkok in eighth, Kagurazaka in Tokyo in 25th, and Everton Road in Singapore in 33rd.
