China’s latest incursions a show of joint combat capabilities: experts

China’s deployment of a record number of military aircraft to Taiwan’s air defense identification zone (ADIZ) for two consecutive days was a display of its joint combat capabilities, defense experts said Sunday.

A total of 38 People’s Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, including 24 J-16 fighter jets, entered Taiwan’s southwestern ADIZ on Friday, setting a record for the largest intrusion since September 2020, when the Taiwan government began issuing reports of such actions by China.

On Saturday, the PLA again sent a fleet of aircraft into Taiwan’s ADIZ, numbering 39 planes, which broke the previous day’s record.

Asked to comment, Chieh Chung (??), a research fellow at the Taiwan think tank Association of Strategic Foresight, told CNA that the incursions over the past two days had occurred both at night and during the day, in a show of the PLA’s capabilities to deploy military assets to Taiwan at any time.

Furthermore, Chieh said, the aircraft were from different squadrons, which was a demonstration to Taiwan and United States of the PLA’s joint combat capabilities and its ability to quickly assemble assets from different units.

Expressing similar views on the recent incursions, Shu Hsiao-huang (???), an analyst at the government-funded Institute for National Defense and Security Research (INDSR), told CNA that the PLA was testing its joint combat and communication capabilities.

It remains to be seen if China will continue its large-scale aerial maneuvers near Taiwan, given the reported unreliability of the PLA aircraft engines, Shu said.

He said China’s J-16D electronic warfare airplanes are likely to be included in similar incursions in the future to test Taiwan’s air defense system.

The J-16D, which was built based on the J-16 fighter jet, is equipped with signal jammers that can disable enemy radar, missile guiding systems, and wireless communication.

Shu said Taiwan’s military should continue to beef up its air defense and radar systems in response to the increasing PLA threat.

The ADIZ is an area declared by a country to allow it to identify, locate and control approaching foreign aircraft, but such zones are not considered territorial airspace.

CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan reports zero new domestic cases, relaxes mask mandate

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Sunday reported zero new domestically transmitted COVID-19 cases, adding that Taiwan’s outdoor face mask mandate would be partially relaxed.

Sunday marked the fourth consecutive day of zero new domestic cases reported in Taiwan, and the second straight day with no deaths, according to CECC data.

Taiwan reported six new imported cases, however, involving two Taiwanese and four foreign nationals. All six had arrived in Taiwan recently and tested positive during quarantine, the CECC said.

As for the mandatory wearing of face masks, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) said that from Tuesday people would no longer need to wear masks in certain outdoor areas if they could stay socially distanced.

Individuals in the agriculture, forestry, fishing, and animal husbandry sectors that work in open spaces, such as fields and fish ponds, as well as people visiting forests and beaches, will not be required to wear masks if social distancing can be maintained.

They would still have to carry a mask with them, however, as they still need to wear masks if there is a sudden surge in crowds, Chen said.

Face masks became a requirement for those riding on public transport in April 2020. A comprehensive outdoor mask mandate was introduced after Taiwan’s COVID-19 alert level was raised to Level 3 in mid-May 2021, amid a spike in locally transmitted cases.

The alert level was lowered to Level 2 on July 27, and several exceptions to face mask requirements have been announced since, such as when having a meal, as well as when driving alone or with family members in a car.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed a total of 16,250 COVID-19 cases, of which 14,417 are domestic infections reported since May 15, when the country first recorded more than 100 cases in a single day.

Since Aug. 15, however, the daily number of domestic cases has fallen to mostly single digits, totaling 114, according to CECC data.

With no new deaths reported Sunday for the second consecutive day, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 843, with all but 12 recorded since May 15, CECC data showed.

Taiwan out of U-23 Baseball World Cup after defeat against Venezuela

The Taiwan men’s national baseball team lost to Venezuela 2-5 to finish sixth in the super round of the U-23 Baseball World Cup on Friday, thereby failing to advance to the medal game of the biennial tournament in Mexico.

Taiwanese starter Lin Yu-min (???) pitched four respectable innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while striking out nine batters, before he was relieved by Hsu Chi-ling (???) in the bottom of the fifth.

Hsu pitched one solid inning, allowing no hits and keeping his team only one run behind.

However, reliever Chiu Chun-wei (???) got off to a rocky start and allowed Venezuela to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, with Antonio Pinero’s RBI single capping his team’s scoring for the day.

The Taiwanese batters, meanwhile, managed to score only one run each in the third and fourth innings.

With Friday’s loss, Taiwan ended its World Cup run, finishing with four wins in eight games in this year’s tournament.

After the match, Lin told reporters that he was satisfied with his overall performance, although he had not been able to throw his pitches as fast as he would have liked.

The 18-year-old left-hander said the World Cup event in Mexico, his first international tournament, was a learning experience.

His personal goal during the tournament was to avoid any major mistakes that would cause huge losses for the Taiwan team, he said.

The head coach of the national U-23 team, Wu Ssu-hsien (???), said he was satisfied with the performance of his players and thought they had learned a lot during the games in Mexico.

The tournament was a good opportunity for the players to get a sense of the standard of play at that level and also to aim for a goal, Wu said.

Following Taiwan’s defeat Friday, the team was sixth in the super round, behind Venezuela, Mexico, Columbia, Cuba and Panama.

The U-23 Baseball World Cup is a biennial world championship, featuring players aged 21-23, but the age limit was raised to 24 this year, as the tournament was not played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The medal game will be held Sunday, with Mexico and Venezuela vying for gold, while Columbia and Cuba will compete for bronze.

Taiwan-listed BizLink to acquire assets from Leoni for 450 million euros

BizLink Holding Inc., an interconnect electronics component supplier listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange, has agreed to acquire the industrial solution assets from Germany’s Leoni AG for 450 million euros or about NT$14.51 billion (US$518 million).

In a statement released Friday, U.S.-headquartered BizLink, which is well-known for its supply of auto components, said it has signed a binding agreement with Leoni to acquire the Leoni Industrial Solutions business group in cash from the German company.

“BizLink’s acquisition of Leoni Industrial Solutions will boost our technical and service capabilities, solidify our global scale, bring us closer to customers, and gain access to new industrial customers,” BizLink Chairman Roger Liang (???) said in a statement.

“The acquisition brings forward our long-term diversification plans, and will provide BizLink with immediate gains within multiple secular growth industries,” Liang said.

He said the deal is expected to help BizLink accelerate its pace to become a global leader in providing interconnect solutions across its industrial, IT data center, automotive and electrical appliance segments.

Liang added that the acquisition is also expected to expand the company’s global footprint with additional operational scale across Europe, North America and Asia, while it is expected to boast an increased ability to penetrate attractive, high-growth applications.

According to Leoni, the Industrial Solutions business group belongs to the company’s WCS division (Wire & Cable Solution).

BizLink said the deal has been approved by its board of directors and the assets to be acquired are expected to be accretive immediately after closing.

It added the acquisition will be funded by the company’s existing cash and committed financing.

According to its latest financial reports, BizLink is sitting on NT$9.062 billion in working capital.

It said the Leoni Industrial Solutions business group posted about 430 million euros in sales in 2020 with its products used in a wide range of applications, such as telecommunications, healthcare, robotics, factory automation, and E-mobility, and its clients came from Europe, North America and Asia.

BizLink said the transaction is expected to be completed in early 2022, subject to customary closing conditions and the required regulatory approvals.

In recent years, BizLink has completed several acquisitions for expansion, including the purchases of Leoni’s Electrical Appliances business group in 2017 and of Speedy Industrial Supplies Pte Ltd in 2020.

BizLink’s share trading was suspended on the local main board Friday before the company disclosed the acquisition deal with Leoni. Its trading will resume Monday.

On Thursday, the stock closed up 0.68 percent at NT$223.50 on the TWSE.

Demolition contractor questioned over accidental collapse of building

Prosecutors on Friday launched an investigation into the collapse of a seven-story building in Hualien County earlier in the day, questioning the contractor on a demolition project that was not scheduled to be completed until the end of the year.

The contractor from Yakuo Mechanics and Engineering Company, along with five workers on the demolition site, was questioned to see whether they had violated the Offenses against Public Safety law, the Hualien District Prosecutors Office said.

The seven-story building on Guolian 5th Road in downtown Hualien, which was once a hotel, collapsed Friday afternoon during demolition work, damaging three vehicles parked nearby but causing no casualties, according to the county’s fire department.

The demolition work began three weeks ago and was scheduled to be completed on Dec. 23, according to Teng Tzu-yu (???), head of the Hualien’s Economic Affairs Department.

In a statement Saturday, Yakuo said the 41-year-old building had tilted forward and collapsed prematurely Friday because two of the pillars at the front were hollow.

The company said it will take full responsibility for the building collapse.

According to Teng, however, an investigation will be required into Yakuo’s demolition plan and methods at the building site.

The building, which once housed Manbo Holiday Hotel, was being demolished in preparation for a reconstruction project. As of 2 a.m. Saturday, the debris at the site had been cleared and traffic had resumed on the road in front of the building.

Expo Dubai, Profumo: With Leonardo, Italy showcases strong technological components, reports LaPresse

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Oct. 01, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — (LaPresse) – The Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai showcases “an Italy that also has strong technological components. I am thinking of the presence of Leonardo here. Of an Italy with its best capabilities ranging from the agricultural sector to the service sector and the industrial sector with very high-tech components. As an Italian, I am proud of Leonardo because its technological capabilities compare with the best capabilities around the world. It is an Italy that must have a strong sense of its own capabilities, a great deal of humility and a great desire to work.”

These were the words of Alessandro Profumo, CEO of Leonardo S.p.A., speaking at the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai. Among the novelties presented by Leonardo are technologies and products relating to the new frontiers in the aeronautical industry, with a particular focus on the AW609 tiltrotor, designed and built to achieve an effective synthesis between the operational versatility of the helicopter and the advantages of the aeroplane. “It is an incredibly innovative aircraft: it is a helicopter, as it takes off and lands vertically, as well as an aeroplane, as it goes above the clouds; it can fly in any weather condition. It can go very far and get there very fast. We think,” Profumo added, “that it is an ideal aircraft for many missions, for example for emergency and medical services operations, in cases where a person would have to be rescued by a helicopter and then transferred to a plane to be taken to hospital, or to transport people who want to travel directly from one city to another, over long distances.” Visitors to the Italian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai will also be able to get a close-up look at the robotic drill of the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars 2022 mission – produced with the support of the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and which will search for traces of present or past life in the subsurface of Mars – and at an atomic clock designed for high-precision space applications.

The Luxury Bank Raises $10 Million for the Luxury Ecosystem From Dubai’s ICICB Group, Giving a Boost to the Development of Luxandia

The Luxury Bank today announced a successful raise of $10 million to benefit The Luxury’s entire ecosystem. The funds were raised after an investment by Dubai’s ICICB Group, an investment management company that fosters and funds luxury projects in banking, cryptocurrency trading, commercial real estate, and other related industries worldwide.

Luxandia Metaverse

Luxandia Metaverse

LONDON, Oct. 01, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The $10 million raised will be leveraged across The Luxury Ecosystem’s various projects, including The Luxury Bank, The Luxury Foundation, a cryptocurrency PoS system, offline cryptocurrency exchanges, an NFT marketplace, a job portal, and a news magazine. The funds will also be used to complete The Luxury’s much-anticipated Luxandia, a metaverse platform similar to Second Life and Decentraland, which is dedicated to serving the luxury industry.

“This investment from ICICB Group is proof that The Luxury is delivering the ecosystem that the luxury industry’s needs. We are confident that the launch of the Luxandia metaverse platform will garner huge public interest and have a significant impact on the luxury industry,” said Catalin Dascalu, The Luxury’s CEO.

“Currently, everything is on schedule or running ahead of schedule. We calculate that by mid-2022, our teams will deliver the final version of all ongoing projects in The Luxury Ecosystem.”

While the luxury industry took a 23% hit during the heights of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, that same year also saw a global 2.5% growth in the number of HNWIs (High Net Worth Individuals) and UHNWIs (Ultra High Net Worth Individuals) – many of whom are Millennials and Generation Z, groups who seek investment pieces and unique experiences both online and offline.

The development of the Luxandia metaverse is focused on bringing real-world luxury into a virtual reality space of affluence that creates luxury shopping and experiences for individuals. Luxandia will feature a 3D luxury shopping mall, NFT auction houses, and even a virtual 3D cinema, with The Luxury promising many more experiences to come as the metaverse is built out.

As a first in the luxury industry, the Luxandia metaverse will lead the industry into the 21st century; a shopper may browse luxury brand clothing in a 3D mall, then try on and purchase an NFT-certified authentic outfit before heading to see the latest blockbuster in the virtual 3D cinema – all without ever leaving their home.

At the same time, businesses that join Luxandia will benefit from having a presence – not just through retail sales but also through gaining access to Big Data and AI that allows them to better project future trends and changes as well as better understanding their perfect customers’ motivations and desires.

With Luxandia paving the way for a new virtual space that benefits both business and customer through a mix of modern technology and traditional luxury, investment firms like ICICB Group are betting on Luxandia as a model for a new path forward for the luxury industry. This new, revolutionary path may be more than just a luxury metaverse – but a space where businesses can create incredible virtual store experiences to rival those of their flagships, all while sidestepping the mobility restrictions that came with coronavirus.

“We have gained amazing proprietary knowledge and insight into the current progress and future evolution of The Luxury Ecosystem,” said Airton Arruda, Chairman of the ICICB Group. “We believe that The Luxury will be one of the leading ecosystems in the $224 billion luxury industry due to its functionality and diversification, as well as the strength of the ongoing Luxandia metaverse development.”

ICICB Group’s funding is a significant step in the development of Luxandia, marking the interest of investment management firms in this emergent sector of the luxury industry. With the metaverse able to deliver key benefits to both industry businesses and their customers, interest in the project is already sky-high just months before launch.

Development of the Luxandia metaverse currently stands at 50%, with the metaverse’s full launch scheduled for Spring 2022. Expo Dubai, Severino: Two LUISS installations to unite tradition and innovation

Vice President of LUISS Guido Carli University

Dubai Oct 1st Vice President of LUISS Guido Carli University in Romeinterviewed by LaPresse

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Oct. 01, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — “We, as LUISS, are present” at Expo Dubai “and we are proud. We are presenting a project that brings together tradition and innovation, as is typical of Italy and our projects. We have two installations. One is called ‘Music and Management’, with ‘Leadership’ as its subtitle. Here, the Santa Cecilia Orchestra, founded in 1585, is broadcast by a revolutionary means: an interactive screen on which the spectator, the visitor, can conduct the orchestra with a digital baton. Maestro Pappano teaches us how. We know that conducting an orchestra and directing a company go hand in hand because conducting an orchestra means bringing together, creating harmony between many soloists, and the same thing happens in a company, by creating teams, task forces that can work together.” These were the words of Paola Severino, former Minister of Justice and Vice President of LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome, speaking at the Italian Pavilion at Expo Dubai. “In addition, to allow us to be here every day, even though we are far away, we have created holograms with which we will be here as if physically present, presenting our programmes, our masters and our LUISS Academy, another Italian pride: three gold medals at the Olympics, and a silver medal at the Olympics, and a player who won the European Football Championships with our Italian team. I would say this is a beautiful image of culture, economic recovery, and of the well-being to which we all aspire,” she added. Expo Dubai “is a great signal of economic and cultural recovery. Culture drives the economy and vice versa. It seems to me that today, in Dubai, you can breathe in this feeling of being sustainable and wanting to be on the move again.”
