CORONAVIRUS/Researchers plan to transfer rights to Chinese medicine for COVID-19

Researchers at Taiwan’s National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) who have developed a Chinese medicine formula to suppress COVID-19 are planning to transfer the rights to the product on a non-profit basis, they said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The formula, known as “Jing Guan Fang,” contains weeping forsythia, Baikal skullcap, Chinese thorowax root, Magnolia officinalis bark and Korean mint, and is beneficial in suppressing COVID-19 infection and symptoms, according to Hsu Chung-hua (???), a professor at NYCU’s Institute of Traditional Medicine.

The medicine was developed early in the pandemic, before vaccines became available, by drawing on knowledge of the SARS coronavirus, a close relative of COVID-19, said Hsu, who is also the director of Taipei City Hospital’s Linsen Chinese Medicine and Kunming Branch.

Researchers conducted an initial study on the formula from February to May 2020, by distributing it to frontline medical workers and hospital personnel.

Of the 1,086 people who took the formula, around 90 percent reported a reduction in sore throats, coughs and other common cold symptoms, Hsu said.

Based on these promising results, researchers at NYCU’s Institute of Traditional Medicine and Institute of Pharmacology began conducting animal tests to understand the mechanism behind the effects.

It was found that the formula “significantly reduced” the expression of two proteins in the lungs — ACE2 and TMRSS2 — which act as receptors for the COVID-19 virus, thus impeding the process by which the virus binds to host cells, Hsu said.

The medicine was also effective when administered to laboratory rats as an inhalable drug, he added.

Currently, the formula is only available by prescription from Chinese medicine doctors at public hospitals in Taiwan, said Hsu, who emphasized that it should only be used as a supplement to COVID-19 vaccines.

By transferring the formula, a company could seek regulatory approval to make it available over-the-counter, thus allowing it to reach a larger number of people, he added.

NYCU Vice President Cheng Tzu-hao (???) said the university was looking for a manufacturer to whom it could transfer the rights to the formula on a charitable basis, citing the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine partnership as an example.

The NYCU team’s research on the formula was published on March 21 in the international scientific journal Frontiers in Pharmacology.

Taiwanese biochemist Wong Chi-huey receives Chemical Pioneer Award

Taiwanese biochemist Wong Chi-huey (???) has received a 2022 Chemical Pioneer Award for his outstanding contributions in the field of chemistry, according to an Academia Sinica statement Tuesday.

The American Institute of Chemistry, an American nonprofit group aimed at advancing chemical science, announced on March 31 that Wong and Alison Butler, a University of California chemistry professor, were this year’s recipients of its annual Chemical Pioneer Award.

Wong, who was president of Taiwan’s Academia Sinica from 2006 to 2016, is currently a Scripps family chair professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute and a distinguished Research Fellow at Academia Sinica’s Genomics Research Center.

First given in 1966, the Chemical Pioneer Award recognizes chemists or chemical engineers who have made outstanding contributions that have had a major impact on advances in chemical science and/or the chemical profession, according to the Institute of Chemistry.

Wong was the first scientist to develop innovative chemoenzymatic methods, including the automated synthesis of oligosaccharides and glycoproteins, which are aimed at developing cancer vaccines, sugar chips, and antiviral and antimicrobial agents, according to Academia Sinica.

The latest award added to a long list of awards given Wong, including the Welch Award in Chemistry from the U.S.-based Welch Foundation in 2021 and the Royal Society of Chemistry Robert Robinson Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry in United Kingdom.

Taiwan democracy an example for China’s people: Swedish parliamentarian

The head of a visiting Swedish parliamentary delegation said Tuesday that Taiwan’s democracy is an example for the “1 billion people on the other side of the strait,” and it is important for democracies worldwide to unite and help Taiwan defend its values.

In a virtual meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen (???), who is currently in home quarantine, chief of the Swedish-Taiwanese parliamentarian association Boriana Åberg said she was proud to see Taiwan ranked No. 8 on a global democracy list earlier this year.

She was referring to the 2021 Democracy Index rankings released by the Economist Intelligence Unit in February, which listed Taiwan as the No. 1 “full democracy” in Asia, and the eighth worldwide.

While Taiwan’s democracy serves as “an example for the 1 billion people on the other side of the strait,” it is also a major threat to the communist regime in China, which forbids its people from enjoying any form of freedom, Åberg said.

That is why Beijing, over the years, has been threatening Taipei with unification, by force if necessary, she said, adding that the world is currently witnessing the consequences of “a dictator’s ambition for unification,” in the Russia-Ukraine war.

Photo courtesy of the Presidential Office

In light of the atrocities committed by Russia in its ongoing invasion of Ukraine, it is the duty of the world’s democracies to “stand with Taiwan and defend its freedom and its democratic values by any means,” Åberg said.

In the international arena, she said, her delegation supports Taiwan’s inclusion in the World Health Organization, but it is “a shame” that Taiwan has been barred from attending the annual World Health Assembly for years.

“We are prepared to do everything in our power to defend the existence and sovereignty of Taiwan,” said Åberg, who arrived in Taipei on Sunday with her delegation for a five-day visit.

The co-leader of the delegation, Charlie Weimers, also expressed similar views, saying that the European Union and Taiwan share democratic values and threats of an authoritarian takeover.

“We have shared interests to protect the rule-based world order, in order for small democracies like Sweden and Taiwan to continue to live and thrive,” said Weimers, who is a member of the EU parliament.

He said that during a meeting Monday with Taiwan’s Digital Minister Audrey Tang (??), the Swedish delegation learned more about Taiwan’s experience and expertise in combating Chinese disinformation.

The delegation also met with Swedish business representatives in Taipei on Monday, Weimers said, adding that he has always been supportive of a possible EU-Taiwan trade agreement.

“I will continue to advocate my own personal conviction, which is that the EU-Taiwan friendship should have no end limit, no forbidden areas and no upper bounds,” he said.

Courtesy of the Presidential Office

Tsai, meanwhile, thanked the delegation for their long-awaited visit to Taiwan, which she said had been postponed for a while due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taiwan and Sweden are like-minded partners that share universal values of freedom and democracy, the president said.

In the face of the expansion of authoritarianism, democratic partners around the world must unite to defend their way of life and to build a resilient democratic alliance, she said.

The president also advocated for a Taiwan-Sweden air services agreement that would allow direct flights between the two countries and closer private sector cooperation and trade exchanges.

Tsai’s meeting with the delegation was scheduled to be held at the Presidential Office, but it was changed to a virtual discussion after she came into contact last Friday with someone who later tested positive for COVID-19, and she subsequently went into home quarantine, according to her spokesperson.

Vice President Lai Ching-te (???) later received the Swedish visitors at the Presidential Office.

CORONAVIRUS/Taiwan COVID-19 cases could soon hit 1,000 a day after reaching 551 Tuesday

The daily number of domestic COVID-19 infections are almost certain to reach 1,000 by the end of April, Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (???) predicted Tuesday as Taiwan reported a single-day high for 2022 of 551 new domestic cases.

Speaking on a radio show before Tuesday’s case numbers were released, Chen said that based on the current trend, the number of new domestic cases reported each day is almost certain to reach 1,000 by the end of April.

Currently, Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, and Taoyuan are considered high risk, as these cities are reporting more domestic cases with unknown sources of infection, Chen said.

He urged people to follow disease prevention measures, adding, “it is unnecessary to panic, but it is necessary for everyone to take action.”

Later Tuesday, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) reported a total of 663 new COVID-19 cases in Taiwan, including 551 domestically transmitted infections, both single-day highs for 2022 to date.

It was the first time this year that the single-day number of domestic infections exceeded 500 and the 12th consecutive day they exceeded 100.

The domestic cases were spread across 17 of Taiwan’s 22 cities and counties, with New Taipei reporting the highest number at 162, followed by Taipei with 115, Kaohsiung with 61, and Taoyuan with 53.

Keelung recorded 37 cases, Hualien County 31, Taichung 26, Hsinchu County 16, Pingtung County 14, Tainan nine, Yilan County and Hsinchu City eight each, Chiayi County four, Miaoli County three, Yunlin County two, and one each in Changhua and Nantou counties.

Of the 4,415 domestic COVID-19 cases recorded nationwide from Jan. 1 to April 11, 13 were classified as moderate infections and two as severe, while the rest, accounting for 99.66 percent of the total, were either mild or asymptomatic, according to the CECC.

The figures do not include imported cases reclassified as domestic ones, nor retroactively removed cases. As of April 12, Taiwan recorded 4,928 domestic cases in 2022, while the total number of imported cases rose to 9,077 from 2,375 on Dec. 31.

Meanwhile, 112 new imported cases were reported on Tuesday, with 30 of them involving travelers who tested positive on arrival in Taiwan, the CECC said.

To date, Taiwan has confirmed 28,666 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began in early 2020, including 19,535 domestically transmitted infections, according to CECC data.

With no deaths reported Tuesday, the number of confirmed COVID-19 fatalities in the country remained at 854, the data showed.
