BTS’ Jungkook to headline 2023 Global Citizen Festival

Jungkook, a member of K-pop juggernaut BTS, will headline 2023 Global Citizen Festival, a large-scale U.S. charity concert set to be held this month, the group’s agency said Thursday, citing the festival’s official social media accounts.

The Global Citizen Festival is a large-scale charity concert organized by Global Citizen, a New York-based international civic group. The festival has been held annually since 2012 to raise awareness of global issues, such as extreme poverty, hunger and climate change.

This year’s edition will be held on Sept. 23 at New York City’s Central Park. Taking part in the 2021 event through online streaming, BTS performed “Permission to Dance” and “Butter” against the backdrop of Sungnyemun, South Korea’s National Treasure No. 1, also known as Namdaemun.

Jungkook has been named a headliner for the 2023 event, along with rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers and pop star Lauryn Hill. Jungkook is the first K-pop solo artist to perform at the festival.

“I’m really excited to participate in this year’s Global Citizen Festival as a headliner,” the BTS vocalist said through his agency. “I’m happy to be able to join a festival with such a meaningful cause. I want to perform before many people as soon as possible.”

Jungkook has also been nominated in the Song of Summer category for his hit solo song “Seven” at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards set to take place Tuesday at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Padres’ Choi Ji-man suffers foot injury in minor league rehab game

In his latest setback during an injury-plagued season, San Diego Padres infielder Choi Ji-man has suffered a bruised foot during a minor league rehab game.

Playing for the Triple-A El Paso Chihuahuas, Choi fouled a ball off his right foot against the Round Rock Express in El Paso, Texas, on Tuesday (local time). Choi is recovering from a left rib cage strain that sidelined him last month.

Reports coming out of the United States on Wednesday claimed Choi had suffered a fracture, and a blurb on MLB.com said the latest injury “seems likely to end his season.”

However, Choi’s representatives in South Korea told Yonhap News Agency on Thursday that the player had a bruise with no structural damage and added that Choi is expected to resume his rehab once his pain subsides.

Choi started this season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, following an offseason trade from the Tampa Bay Rays. He batted only .205 with six home runs in 23 games for the Pirates and missed the early portion of the season with an Achilles tendon injury.

Choi was dealt to the Padres in early August but went 0-for-11 in seven games with his new team before the rib injury sent him back to the injured list.

The 32-year-old is slated to become a free agent after this season.

S. Korean canoeists looking forward to beating ex-N. Korean teammates at Asian Games

Five years ago in Indonesia, canoeists from South Korea and North Korea joined hands for dragon boat racing at the Asian Games, winning a gold medal and two bronze medals in their history-making appearance.

They won’t have a chance to defend their title together at this year’s Asian Games in China, however, as the Koreas are unlikely to assemble a joint squad this time. And if paddlers from the two countries go up against one another as foes, then there will be no love lost on the South Korean end.

“We’re not going to take it easy on them,” South Korean women’s dragon boat captain Kim Hyeon-hee said Thursday during the national team media day in the central county of Buyeo. “We absolutely want to win that race if that happens.”

Dragon boat will be a discipline of canoe at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou. Kim was a member of the gold medal-winning unified Korean team in the women’s 500 meters in 2018, along with another returning paddler, Byun Eun-jeong. Kim and Byun also raced to bronze in the women’s 200m then.

The Korea Canoe Federation has not yet been able to confirm if North Korea will compete in dragon boat, but Kim said she and her teammates will not be surprised if North Korea sends its canoeists.

“We trained together for such a long time and won medals as a result of that. I do miss them, but if they do compete, I will regard them as our rivals,” Kim said. “I clearly remember how good they were back then. And I will work hard with my teammates here to try to topple them and make sure our national anthem will be played at the end.”

Byun, who shed tears when she parted ways with her North Korean teammates in 2018, said she will try to put aside her personal feelings if the all-Korean showdown materializes.

“Of course, we want to do better than North Korea this time,” Byun said. “Meeting them again will take me back in time, though.”

An Hyun-jin, who won bronze in the men’s 1,000m with North Koreans five years ago, also had mixed feelings about a possible reunion with his former teammates from north of the border.

“A race is a race. But I also remember telling them we should try to meet again in the future,” An said. “Hopefully, we will both battle as hard as we can and then spend some time together away from the competition afterward.”

Park Min-ho, head coach of the men’s team, said he wasn’t worried about North Korea as a rival per se, because China, Chinese Taipei and Thailand will present much bigger challenges for South Korea.

“As far as I can tell, those other countries have prepared so hard for this event,” Park said. “But we have a set of data that will help us against them. We’re not going to pay particular attention to North Korea even if they do come, and we’ll instead keep our focus on beating other contenders.”

Blue Jays’ Ryu Hyun-jin suffers 2nd loss of season vs. lowly Athletics

Toronto Blue Jays starter Ryu Hyun-jin has suffered his second loss of the season, getting undone by a long ball against the worst team in Major League Baseball (MLB).

Ryu gave up two runs on five hits in five innings against the Oakland Athletics at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland on Wednesday (local time). All of the damage against the South Korean left-hander came via a two-run shot by Carlos Perez in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Pitching on four days’ rest for the first time this season, Ryu left the game with the Blue Jays trailing 2-1, and they lost 5-2, as their three-game winning streak came to a halt.

Ryu, who struck out five and walked one, fell to 3-2 for the season, and his ERA went up from 2.48 to 2.65. He threw 50 of his 77 pitches for strikes.

In seven starts since returning from last year’s Tommy John surgery, Ryu has not yet gone longer than five innings or thrown more than 86 pitches.

The Athletics came into this game with the worst record in MLB at 42-97, having dropped the first two games of this series against the Blue Jays.

Ryu was in fine form early, as he retired the first seven batters he faced. He then pitched around a one-out single by Nick Allen in the bottom of the third.

Allen stole second base with two outs — the first steal on Ryu by any opponent since August 2021 — but he was stranded there when Ryu struck out Zack Gelof to end the inning.

The Blue Jays spotted Ryu a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but Ryu squandered that advantage in the fourth with Perez’s go-ahead home run.

With two outs and a runner at first, Ryu threw a down-and-in fastball on Perez, who drove the 90.5 mph pitch 410 feet over the left field wall and put the Athletics ahead 2-1.

It was the fifth homer served up by Ryu this season, four of which have come in his past three starts.

The Athletics kept the inning going with a single and a walk, before Ryu escaped the jam with a fielder’s choice groundout off the bat of Allen.

The Blue Jays couldn’t get their bats going against Ryu’s counterpart, JP Sears, and Ryu worked a nervy fifth inning to keep it a one-run game.

Esteury Ruiz led off the fifth with a single and went on to steal second and third bases, though Ryu stranded the speedy runner at third with a pair of strikeouts and a flyout.

The A’s swiped three bags on Ryu, who had never allowed more than two steals in any of his previous nine MLB seasons.

Trevor Richards took over from Ryu to begin the sixth and promptly served up a three-run homer to Kevin Smith that put the Blue Jays in a 5-1 hole.

The Jays got a run back on Davis Schneider’s solo shot in the eighth but couldn’t get any closer.

With his usual catcher, Danny Jansen, out with a fractured finger, Ryu pitched to Tyler Heineman for the first time.

Bangkok begins improving sidewalks to solve the problem of narrow areas between trees.

Bangkok Metropolitan Administration begins improving sidewalks with porous asphalt to solve the problem of narrow sidewalks between trees. The roots of trees along the road receive water and air better.

(September 7, 2023) Mr. Chatchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok Surveyed the sidewalk from Soi Inthamara 14 to Saphan Kwai Intersection, Phayathai District, to test the use of Porous Asphalt for paving at the base of the trees. Improving the whole sidewalk with Universal Design and adjusting the landscape to bring the communication cable to the ground. with Mr. Wisanu Subsompon, Deputy Governor of Bangkok Mr. Ekawaranyu Amrapal, Spokesman of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Mr. Tawatchai Napasaksri, Director of Public Works Department (Public Works Department), Mr. Namchai Sansupha, President of the Association of Landscape Architects of Thailand and the Big Tree group attended the site visit.

Governor Chatchart said that Bangkok is in the process of improving sidewalks in 17 routes, with this year about 200 kilometers will be implemented. The important thing is that the trees on the sidewalks must be able to water and breathe. which came from going to see the work in Fukuoka Japan 2 weeks ago It was found that porous asphalt was used to pave the pavement before laying tiles to allow water to seep into it. It can also help the city in the case of draining water from the road. Due to porous asphalt It is a porous type of asphalt. It has the outstanding feature of draining water vertically. This allows the plant roots to be well ventilated and watered. and can help increase some sidewalk space Which before pouring, the soil must be improved and fertilized completely. Then add sand and gravel. Before proceeding with asphalt paving Makes water go down to the tree roots 100% fully.

Governor Chatchart also said that from examining the porous asphalt that was used to pour around the base of the tree, Soi Inthamara 14 to Saphan Kwai Intersection. According to the pilot project, the use of porous asphalt instead of paving brick blocks to expand the sidewalk area. The overall picture is smooth and on par with a good pedestrian walkway. and water can flow through well This way, when the sidewalk is being repaired, it will be quick and easy to fix. In which the pavement in this form has been built underground communication cables to support utility operators. and supports the future expansion of water pipes as well. Reduce the problem of repetitive sidewalk construction digging. This will be completed within two months, with people along the route appreciating that it can be built quickly. Walking more easily Solve traffic problems And can be connected to travel such as electric trains and the Feeder system. In the future, pedestrian walkways will be converted into covered walkways, which are
covered along the route. which is currently being implemented at Horwang School

Governor Chatchat said at the end that What requires cooperation is the issue of hawker stalls. Must not return to sell on sidewalks where sales are prohibited. Including motorcycles, riding on the sidewalk is prohibited. Today’s route has many motorcycle repair shops. I have asked for cooperation to publicize and tell customers not to drive on the sidewalk to bring their cars in for repairs. Instead, use the method of bringing the motorcycle up for repairs. This is because the weight of the motorcycle affects the damage to the pavement tiles. In addition, there is danger to pedestrians. And it’s also illegal.

Deputy Wisanu added that In the future, construction or repair of sidewalks in Bangkok The aforementioned form will be used, namely, form 1, which is pouring concrete and reinforcing a 10 cm wire mesh, then laying tiles over it. The second pattern is to pave all the asphalt and then lay tiles over it. Depending on the context of repairing the pavement construction of each route Which must be analyzed from the method that uses the most economical budget. but got the greatest number of distances In addition, the renovated sidewalks will be improved to a universal design that is suitable for all types of people of all ages, including the disabled. in order to adapt to be like this in the whole of Bangkok in the future

The benefits of using porous asphalt are: Porous Asphalt at the base of trees is 1. Solving the problem of narrow sidewalks between trees. 2. Solving the problem of tree roots pushing against sidewalk tiles. 3. Solving the problem of water stagnating on sidewalks during rain. By means of further development of use A trial area will be created, such as around the trees near Bangkok City Hall. and various roads, as well as training officials/contractors to understand and be able to put into practice correctly Including the preparation of standards for the use of porous asphalt. Between the Public Works Office and the Parks Office Together with manufacturers of porous asphalt and related professional organizations such as the Landscape Architects Association of Thailand as well.
