3 arrested over murder of Vietnamese man in Tainan

Three men have been arrested over the murder of an absconded Vietnamese migrant worker who was beaten and stabbed to death in Tainan Saturday, the Tainan District Court said in a statement Monday.

According to police, the three suspects, also Vietnamese migrant workers, assaulted the victim, surnamed Phan (?), using a metal club and a knife at Phan’s home in Tainan’s Annan District before fleeing the scene.

Phan was found with multiple stab wounds, including two to the left side of his chest and a deep laceration, and was pronounced dead at a local hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning after efforts to resuscitate him failed, police said.

Two of the suspects, a man surnamed Nguy?n (?) and a man surnamed Lê (?), were apprehended in Tainan’s Anping District by police later on Saturday, and are currently being held incommunicado by prosecutors.

Meanwhile, a third suspect was detained Sunday in Taichung and is undergoing questioning, according to police, who said Phan seemed to have had an argument with the third suspect over a relationship problem.

Police said Nguy?n and the third suspect had confessed to being driven to Phan’s residence by Lê while in possession of a metal bat and a 60-centimeter knife.

Police added that initial investigations indicated that both Nguy?n and the third suspect played a major role in Phan’s death, while Lê acted as a getaway driver.

The suspects could face a minimum sentence of five years in prison over their role in Phan’s death, the court said.

According to the court, the decision to hold Nguy?n and Lê incommunicado was made because they are considered a flight risk and to prevent them from destroying evidence.
