Academia Sinica to host 10 Ukrainian scholars, students

Academia Sinica, Taiwan’s top research institution, will host 10 Ukrainian scholars and students as part of Taiwan’s efforts to assist Ukrainians in the wake of Russia’s invasion, said the institute’s president James Liao (???) Wednesday.

As Ukrainian men are being called up for the war, a total of 10 female Ukrainian scholars and students will be invited to come to Taiwan, Liao said when asked by lawmakers at a legislative session about the institute’s efforts in assisting Ukraine, adding there could be more invited to come in the future.

The invitations came about after the institute was contacted by the Polish Academy of Sciences to discuss ways of helping academics in Ukraine after having issued a statement against the invasion, Liao said.

According to Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmaker Chang Liao Wan-chien (????), there are currently four Ukrainian researchers and one doctoral student at Academia Sinica.

In addition, Kuomintang legislator Lin Yi-Hua (???) asked Liao about how Academia Sinica plans to continue its partnership with Russian institutes and academics in the future.

Citing Academia Sinica materials, Lin said the institute had worked with Russian partners on 13 projects over the past five years, with seven having been completed.

In response, Liao said both sides currently have a joint project on earth science at the institute level, which is scheduled to conclude in June, and there is no plan for more follow-up exchanges.

Other projects are being carried out at the individual level, Liao said, adding that there is currently one Russian scholar at the institute.

Academia Sinica will look into the nature of those projects to decide how to handle them, he said.
