Actress Barbie Hsu announces second marriage

Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (???) and South Korean musician Koo Jun-yup announced they had married on their respective social media accounts Tuesday.

Although the news took fans by surprise, as 45-year-old Hsu only announced her divorce from Chinese restaurateur Wang Xiaofei (???) on Nov. 22 last year, the couple’s whirlwind romance came after a brief relationship over two decades earlier.

In 2010, Koo revealed in an interview that he and Hsu once dated for a year when he first came to Taiwan as half of the South Korean dance music duo, Clon, in 1998.

Koo also said that it was Hsu who made the first move, but that due to his fame at that time they kept their relationship a secret, often going on dates in disguise.

They separated after dating for about a year, he added.

Koo, 52, revealed in an Instagram post Tuesday that this time he made the first move, writing that he and Hsu are bound by fate and their relationship from 20 years ago.

“Upon hearing of her divorce,” Koo said, “I dug up her phone number from 20 years ago and contacted her.”

Announcing their marriage in the post, Koo said he proposed to Hsu after feeling they had already wasted too much time apart.

In a social media post, Hsu confirmed Koo’s announcement, saying “Life is unpredictable, and I treasure my happiness at this moment. I am grateful that I now have what I have.”

Hsu is perhaps best known for her breakout role as Shan Cai in the 2001 Taiwanese romance television series “Meteor Garden” (????).

While Hsu was already an established singer and TV host alongside her younger sister Dee Hsu (???), “Meteor Garden” took the careers of Hsu and the show’s male lead to new heights.

Hsu’s agent also confirmed the couple’s marriage to CNA on Tuesday, saying the couple registered their union in South Korea.
