TES to Play Strategic Role in Australia’s Battery Recycling Ecosystem

The correct handling of end-of-life lithium-ion batteries is already a challenge, and it’s one that’s growing. A study by the Institute for Sustainable Futures found that the end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) and smartphone LIB stream is expected to grow by 1,300% in volume between 2025 and 2035.

SYDNEY, July 13, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — The New South Wales (NSW) Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has made grants available to companies that propose innovative solutions to address the growing challenge of dealing with end-of-life LIBs from decommissioned solar energy storage systems. TES has been successful in winning a grant from the NSW EPA to build a one-of-a-kind facility in Western Sydney to test, repurpose, and recycle LIBs from solar energy storage systems. The facility will also be capable of processing LIBs from electric vehicles and e-mobility and portable devices.

The NSW EPA selected TES’s proposal to move forward and awarded AU $1.9 million in funding to get started. This project was funded under the NSW EPA Circular Solar Grants Program.

The new battery treatment facility in Villawood is projected to generate upwards of 20 green jobs and will utilize TES’s existing proprietary hydrometallurgical technology.

In a further testament to TES as a best-in-class sustainable battery solution provider, TES has recently been honored with several prestigious awards, notably an Edison Award in the Power Generation and Recovery category.

Contributing to growing battery infrastructure in Singapore, France, China, and the Port of Rotterdam, this facility is the latest to be announced that will join TES’s already unrivaled network of 40 owned and operated facilities.

TES’s proprietary process first extracts black mass, followed by a proprietary hydrometallurgical process to extract scarce elements such as nickel, cobalt, and lithium to close the loop for these metals—reducing the world’s dependence on mined materials.

The facility is expected to be up and running in summer 2023, ready to handle some 2,000 tons per year of end-of-life LIB units. This includes 800 tons per year from Australia’s large and growing solar energy storage battery infrastructure.

“This funding is supporting the drive toward a circular economy by helping New South Wales develop new ways of dealing with battery storage waste, which is increasingly important as currently installed systems reach the end of their life,” says NSW Minister for Environment James Griffin. “While the amount of battery storage system waste is low at the moment, we want to make sure New South Wales is ahead of the curve with innovative ways of managing this emerging waste stream.”

Thomas Holberg, Global Vice President (VP) of TES Sustainable Battery Solutions notes, “Collaboration with forward-thinking governments like New South Wales is a critical component to solving big challenges like this. The project will complement emerging infrastructure that is being established, including the collection network being built around these products.”

Most importantly, if future demand for closed-loop recovery develops locally, TES will invest in further capabilities to produce battery-grade metals to supply domestic manufacturing and reduce dependence on supply from outside Australia.

The project in NSW perfectly aligns the goals of the state with the private-sector expertise and qualifications of TES. “We’re excited about this project and are eager to demonstrate to New South Wales that end-of-first-life lithium-ion batteries, when handled properly, create circular economy opportunities close to where waste is generated, which doesn’t just help keep scarce materials in use for as long as possible but also minimizes greenhouse gas emission impacts associated with transportation and manufacturing of new batteries,” remarks Alvin Piadasa, Group Sustainability Director, TES.

Sinch report reveals consumers want better ways to get real-time financial services and connect with their bank

Bank to the Future–PR-thumbnail

Bank to the Future

One in three under 40 switch banks to get a better mobile experience as customers want more personalized two-way interaction

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, and ATLANTA — July 13, 2022 — Consumers want far more personalized mobile banking experiences that make it easy for them to get real time 1:1 support anywhere, says a survey of almost 3,000 consumers, commissioned by Sinch (Sinch AB (publ) – XSTO: SINCH). With 93% calling out for personalized financial assessments from their bank, but fewer than 30% receiving them, the survey across 15 countries shows customers would benefit from a greater level of interactive personalized communication with their banks and financial partners.

Customers want two-way, real-time interactions that can solve banking problems as they happen, no matter where they are. Fifty-three percent are frustrated when they cannot reply to a mobile message and one in three under 40 who have even switched banks to get a better mobile experience. This desire for personalized banking and being able to communicate easily is more pronounced in younger customers, as over 80% of Gen Z surveyed want to solve even more complex tasks using digital channels including completing a loan application or sharing personal information to get tailored financial product recommendations.

Getting answers instantly

In addition, 98% say they want their questions answered quickly, but just 58% experience this. While most banks offer support via email or in-app communication channels, they have yet to capitalize on the opportunity to connect 1:1 with customers and build stronger relationships through text messaging.

It’s about securing trust

The research shows a positive technology experience is highly correlated with securing consumer trust. Banks that do not deliver on good experiences are significantly less likely to have customers that say they trust their banks. Trust is also gained by knowing when human interaction with a customer is needed. Even with widespread usage of automated chat options, in moments of frustration customers still want to hear a human voice; 95% of those surveyed want an option to switch seamlessly from automated messaging to a human conversation from inside the messaging stream.

“Our survey shows that omnichannel engagement is fast becoming the answer for banks to improve customer experience,” said Jonathan Bean, CMO of Sinch. “It is all about interactive, personalized communications that are relevant to customers’ financial goals, and how easy it is to get a response from a person when needed. Though many are still building their trust in digital banking, technology can also help customers feel more secure too. Banks that partner with a reliable CPaaS vendor gain a unique advantage for securing both customer engagement and trust through a wide range of real time communications and verification solutions, like multi-factor authentication and two step verification, using channels customers prefer and are familiar with.”

The online study of 2,980 consumers across 15 countries was conducted by Ravn Research. To read the full report, visit Sinch Financial Services Report.

Philips highlights AI-powered precision diagnosis portfolio at ECR 2022

July 13, 2022

Philips demonstrates portfolio of smart connected imaging systems and integrated radiology workflow solutions designed to improve diagnostic confidence and clinical outcomes

Amsterdam, the Netherlands and Vienna, Austria – Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, will showcase its award-winning AI-powered systems and solutions debuting at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR, July 13-17, Vienna, Austria).  Philips will demonstrate how its portfolio of smart connected imaging systems and integrated radiology workflow solutions help increase diagnostic confidence and clinical outcomes; help reduce staff stress and burnout; improve patient engagement and quality access to care; and enhance efficiency to help reduce waste.

“Radiology plays such a critical role in diagnosing and guiding patients into the right treatment plans. That’s why we designed our smart connected imaging systems to deliver first time right diagnoses with the latest clinical technologies and applications to drive patient-centric insights supporting early and definitive diagnosis and treatment,” said Kees Wesdorp, Chief Business Leader of Precision Diagnosis at Philips. “Addressing operational inefficiencies across the entire radiology enterprise was also the driving force behind the introduction of our AI-enabled, software defined systems and solutions to assist customers by automating and accelerating routine tasks, generating insights from large amounts of data to help improve productivity and lower the risk of staff burnout.”

Smart connected imaging systems help increase diagnostic confidence
It is projected the amount of healthcare data will grow 36% each year by 2025 [1]. In the recent Future Health Index 2022 Global report commissioned by Philips, one of the biggest challenges facing radiology leaders is managing the sheer volume of data available to them, with nearly a quarter (24%) of those surveyed, citing data management as their top issue. Philips AI-powered leading technologies help turn relevant data into actionable insights to increase diagnostic confidence and improve clinical outcomes.

New at ECR 2022, Philips will spotlight its latest AI-powered, software-defined MR smart systems, including its SmartSpeed artificial intelligence (AI) powered MR acceleration software, which delivers higher image resolution with 3 times faster scan times [2] and virtually no loss in image quality, representing a major step forward in diagnostic confidence and MR department productivity. Philips SmartSpeed joins the growing number of Philips AI powered workflow innovations available across the portfolio of smart Philips MR systems that will be showcased at ECR, including the European introduction of the new smart connected 3T MR system, Philips MR 7700 and the company’s latest MR 5300 1.5T helium-free in operations MR system. Each of these systems uses intelligent software to automate tasks and help relieve the burden on busy radiology staff and departments.

Also new to the European market and being showcased at ECR 2022 is the award-winning Philips Spectral CT 7500, the latest intelligent system to deliver high quality spectral images for every patient on every scan 100% of the time to help improve disease characterization, and reduce rescans and follow-ups, all at the same dose levels as conventional scans. The time-saving spectral workflow is fully integrated, enabling the technologist to get the patient on and off the table quickly – spectral chest scans and head scans take less than one second, and a full upper body spectral scan can be completed in less than two seconds. The new Spectral CT 7500 has demonstrated a 34% reduction in time to diagnosis, a 25% reduction in repeat scans and a 30% reduction in follow-up scans [3].

Integrated radiology workflows drive operational efficiency and improve patient experience
Operational inefficiencies continue to weigh heavily on clinicians and health systems as they strive to deliver the very best care for their patients. It is no surprise that 45% of radiologists reported symptoms of burnout pre-pandemic [4], while 97% of technologists report moderate or severe levels of job stress [5]. Visitors to the Philips Zone at ECR 2022 will see how Philips’ end-to-end, vendor neutral solutions simplify and connect workflows to address productivity challenges across the radiology enterprise.

Philips Radiology Workflow Suite  is a combination of solutions that support clear and efficient radiology workflows. At ECR, Philips continues to expand its Radiology Workflow Suite, introducing new and enhanced solutions across the entire radiology workflow with a focus on:

  • Patient engagement, featuring Philips Care Engagement Manager, a web based clinical and patient decision support software platform intended to aid in remote communication and care management between patients and healthcare providers. The solution is designed to reduce no shows and cancellations, increase referral conversions, improve patient adherence to instructions, reduce staff burden and improve patient engagement, education, and communication.
  • Virtual radiology support with Philips Radiology Operations Command Center [6], a vendor-neutral, multi-modality, multi-site telepresence solution that provides advanced tele-acquisition capabilities and seamlessly connects imaging experts at a command center with technologists at scanners across care locations. Remote expert support removes the barrier of physical distance, extending the ability to offer consistent imaging experiences across organizations regardless of location. Virtual remote radiology support is also provided with Philips Collaboration Live [7], available on Philips ultrasound systems EPIQ Elite and Affiniti, delivering tele-ultrasound capabilities, allowing ultrasound teams to securely talk, text, screen-share, and video stream directly from their ultrasound system to a PC or mobile device to extend the team without expanding it.

Data-driven practice management and patient-centered imaging
At ECR 2022, Philips will spotlight Enterprise Performance Analytics – PerformanceBridge, a vendor-neutral, real-time data platform designed to improve productivity and reduce costs across enterprise-wide imaging departments to enhance operational decision-making. PerformanceBridge integrates data from multiple industry-standard data sources (such as HL7, DICOM and other structured data sources), onto one platform, for immediate access to information necessary for quick actionable observations and detailed reports. Also making its European debut at ECR 2022 is new Philips Pediatric Coaching [8], a holistic mobile app designed to be a less stressful experience for parents and their children undergoing MRI scans. Using gamification and ‘buddy system’ techniques to prepare children and their parents beforehand, the app helps guide young children through the MRI procedure to significantly enhance the patient experience.

Philips hosted symposia sessions and sustainability round table at ECR
Healthcare systems account for 4.4% of carbon emissions worldwide; more than the aviation and shipping industries. Philips will join an educational round table session hosted by the European Society of Radiology (ESR) on July 14 at 12:30PM CET discussing what’s needed to “Build a Green Radiology Department,” featuring leading radiology experts from around the world who will address what can be done now to mitigate the environmental impact of essential imaging technology.

Philips will also host two Symposia sessions, featuring TED Talk-style presentations, and interactive conversations. On Wednesday, July 13, at 11:30AM CET, ECR attendees can join the discussion on “Accelerating Clinical competency through partnership and innovation,” to hear from world-renowned health leaders on how to address the growing demand for early disease diagnosis. On Thursday, July 14, at 12:30PM CET, health leaders will discuss “Balancing high tech and high touch: Keeping patients at the heart through innovation and workflow,” sharing insights on how to drive optimization in diagnostic operations.

All sessions will be live-streamed for attendees to join virtually if they are not at ECR in person. Visit Philips at ECR 2022 for more details.

Philips at ECR 2022
Join Philips in the Philips Zone at ECR 2022 (Level 2 Foyer C of the Austria Center), July 13-17, 2022, in Vienna, Austria, and visit Philips at ECR 2022 for more information on Philips’ AI-powered precision diagnosis portfolio, featuring smart connected imaging systems and integrated radiology workflow solutions, designed to increase diagnostic confidence and clinical outcomes.

This integration expands the scope of aftermarket service and support NCS offers to include Nikkiso Cryo and Nikkiso ACD pumps, as well as turbo expanders. They are also expanding their global footprint for the Nikkiso Cryo aftermarket by adding direct sales and field service support through each of their global facilities. The field service team will be providing overhauls and commissioning both in their centers and on-site, enabling them to provide prompt support locally and regionally.

Additionally, each of their facilities has factory trained staff providing expert knowledge of all the Nikkiso product lines. They also maintain a large spare parts inventory which enables them to provide fast delivery of equipment, minimizing costly downtime.

‘With this expansion, we are looking forward to maximizing our resources and service. This will also allow us to respond more quickly to our customers’ needs, providing individual support, service and solutions,” according to Jim Estes, President of Nikkiso Cryogenic Service.

This integration reflects Nikkiso’s continued commitment to be both a global and local presence for their customers.

ATP’s New High-Endurance, Low-Latency SD/microSD Cards Built for Dashcams, DVRs Offer Over 109K Hours of Continuous Video Recording

ATP’s New High-Endurance, Low-Latency SD/microSD Cards Built for Dashcams, DVRs Offer Over 109K Hours of Continuous Video Recording

ATPs New High-Endurance, Low-Latency SD_microSD Cards_S750_S650

S650 Series in native TLC surpasses other cards with 1.6X higher endurance;
S750 Series in pSLC mode achieves 2X higher endurance

TAIPEI, Taiwan, July 12, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) —  ATP Electronics, the global leader in specialized storage and memory solutions, introduces its new 3D triple level cell (TLC) S750/S650 Series SD and microSD memory cards built for the rigors of non-stop video recording. They meet the high endurance, low latency, and built-to-last data storage requirements of dashcams and digital video recorders (DVRs), as well as surveillance systems, autonomous vehicles, and other write-intensive applications.

High Endurance Over 109K Hours1 of Recording Time in Native TLC
Video evidence can prove critical in many scenarios; hence, it is very important for SD/microSD cards to record non-stop without compromising image quality and integrity. The S650 Series can record Full HD videos continuously up to 109,401 hours — far longer than similar cards marketed as “high endurance.” The S650 Series is based on 5K program/erase (P/E) cycles, which translate to 1.6X higher endurance than typical memory cards with 3K P/E cycles. The S750 Series, configured as pseudo single-level cell (pSLC) is based on 60K P/E cycles, while typical pSLC memory cards are rated for around 20K to 30K P/E cycles.

Comparison for high Endurance Maximum Recording Hours: ATP S650 vs. Other High-Endurance Cards

High-Endurance-Maximum-Recording-Hours-ATP-S650-vs-Other-High-Endurance-Cards

The following graph2 shows the endurance simulation result of ATP S650 128 GB microSD compared with other high-endurance branded cards of the same capacity, in full HD mode.

High Endurance Maximum Recording Hours: ATP S650 vs. Other High-Endurance Cards
——————
Notes:
1 Tested using 128 GB ATP S650 TLC card based on 13 Mbps (lowest bitrate of HD recording) in best-case/ideal scenario, with no other influencing factors.
2 Information sourced by ATP from publicly available data.

  • To record new data, the oldest data will be overwritten when the card is full.
  • 1Mbps=1,000,000 bps

Low Latency: Ready to Record in <1 Second, Writes 50% Faster
After power on, drive recorders may have to wait a few seconds to be ready for recording. The time between the first read command and the first write command from host is the “response time.” ATP S650 and S750 Series cards take less than 1 second response time while normal cards may take 7 to 12 seconds based on real tests on a DVR at room temperature.

While recording 16 MB data sequentially, ATP S650 cards take less than 0.1 second, saving 50% of writing time compared with consumer-rated cards and enabling high-speed backup without data loss.

Own HW/FW Design Features Offer Precise Reliability
As a true manufacturer with its own hardware/firmware capability, ATP can adjust to a variety of usages to fulfill customers’ specific application requirements and conditions. Based on customers’ applications, ATP does its best to meet the requirements by unique FW and HW design.

  • Auto-Read Calibration (ARC). Over time and with constant use, NAND flash memory cells degrade, causing voltage shifts that increase bit error rates (BER). When the normal Read Retry function is not enough to recover the errors, a more precise “Auto Read Calibration” (ARC) is applied to assure data integrity at extreme temperature or degraded NAND cells.
  • ATP Methodology for Advanced Card Analysis. ATP memory cards are IP67/IP57-certified and manufactured using System-in-Package (SiP) wafer/die process, making it difficult to do component analysis compared to SMT (surface- mount technology) process. ATP’s uniquely designed substrate and debug tool make this mission “possible.”
    1. ATP-Developed Hardware Design – Substrate with reserved testing pin is available for future component analysis.
    2. Solder Mask Removal by Laser – Precise and efficient method to remove solder mask so as to reach the reserved testing pins on the substrate.
    3. ATP’s Own Customized Debug Tool – This is connected to the HW reserved testing pin and then linked to the SW analysis system.
