Unionized public service workers to kick off 2nd joint strike

Unionized public service workers are set to stage a joint strike next week, in the second collective action since the rail workers’ walkout last month.

The Korean Public Service and Transport Workers’ Union (KPTU) said some 25,000 union workers of four public institutions — the National Health Insurance Service, Busan subway union and two branches of the Korean Health Care Workers’ Trade Union — will join the walkout scheduled to kick off next Wednesday.

The unionized workers have been pressing the government to suspend what they believe is the government’s push to privatize public services, and reduce wage gaps between regular workers and nonregular workers, and raise real wages.

Earlier, the union of public service workers warned of a joint walkout on three occasions from September through November. In September, rail workers went on a four-day general strike.

Separately, unionized call center workers of KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance launched a strike for the first time Wednesday.

The KPTU also said they will submit additional proof that the government has violated the convention by the International Labour Organization (ILO), which protects the rights of public service workers to organize and collectively bargain.

Last year, the union, along with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, filed a petition to the ILO, saying the government has not stood by its act, despite endorsing the right to organize and collectively bargain in a parliamentary ratification of the conventions in 2021.

Yoon makes surprise visit to Hangeul museum ahead of Hangeul Day

President Yoon Suk Yeol made a surprise visit to the National Hangeul Museum in Seoul on Thursday, four days ahead of Hangeul Day, to look at various exhibitions documenting the history of the Korean alphabet, his office said.

Yoon was greeted by two groups of kindergarteners who were visiting the museum and took photos with them before entering the exhibition halls, which featured a collection of letters written by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty in hangeul and a draft of the first Korean dictionary, among other things, according to presidential spokesperson Lee Do-woon.

“The spirit of hangeul, which was invented by King Sejong, is in line with the goals of freedom, equality and prosperity of the modern day Republic of Korea,” Yoon said as he finished the tour, according to Lee.

“King Sejong wished that all people, regardless of position or gender, would communicate freely through hangeul,” he added. “Unlike the general prejudice that it was only used by people of low positions or women, hangeul was an alphabet equally used by people of various classes from the king to the servant.”

Yoon noted the large role hangeul played in helping South Korea become an IT powerhouse, saying it served as a foundation for the nation’s prosperity.

(3rd LD) S. Korea, Japan agree to keep momentum going for warming ties in ‘strategic dialogue’

South Korea and Japan held vice-ministerial talks in Seoul on Thursday on bilateral relations and other common issues, including the recent development on North Korea’s closer ties with Russia, agreeing to keep the momentum going for thawing relations, Seoul’s foreign ministry said.

The discussions took place during the “strategic dialogue” held between South Korea’s First Vice Foreign Minister Chang Ho-jin and his Japanese counterpart, Masataka Okano, in Seoul earlier in the day, the first such talks in nine years as the two Asian neighbors have quickly been mending ties after years of a chill over a historical row.

Bilateral relations have thawed after South Korea decided in March to compensate Korean victims of Japanese wartime forced labor on its own without asking for contributions from Japanese companies.

The decision led to President Yoon Suk Yeol traveling to Tokyo later that month for summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, becoming the first South Korean president to make a bilateral visit to Japan in 12 years.

Chang said Thursday’s talks were “meaningful as it helped explore in-depth methods to deepen cooperation for the bilateral relations to further develop in a forward-looking manner,” according to the foreign ministry.

Calling the two countries “important neighbors,” Okana noted the talks provided an “opportunity for broader discussions to elevate the Korea-Japan relations to another level.”

The vice ministers agreed to work together to keep the momentum going for the improvement in bilateral relations.

The two sides also agreed to make efforts to revitalize three-way cooperation with China and continue to bolster the trilateral coordination involving the United States in responding to various regional and global challenges.

Also on the table was North Korea’s recent development in relations with Russia.

“The vice ministers strongly condemned North Korea’s continued nuclear and missile provocations and threats, and agreed that South Korea, the U.S. and Japan should lead a firm and united response from the international community based on close coordination,” the ministry said.

Concerns have grown that Pyongyang and Moscow might have reached an arms deal that would help enhance the North’s military capabilities following last month’s summit between leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The meeting also came on the day that Japan discharged its second batch of treated radioactive water from its crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean through Oct. 23, following its first release from Aug. 24 to Sept. 11.

Japan’s release of the radioactive water has had little impact on the warming of relations, as Seoul has maintained the discharge will have little effect on the environment as long as it is done in a scientifically safe manner.

Reviving high-level diplomatic dialogue channels, including restoring the long-suspended “shuttle diplomacy” of regular leader visits, was part of the agreement reached at the March summit. Since then, the two leaders have held five additional summit meetings.

The strategic dialogue, established in 2005, had not taken place since the last meeting in October 2014 due to a chill in bilateral ties.

Following the meeting, Okano paid a courtesy call on South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin.

Asian Games: Indonesia beats China to win dragon boat race

They tried to test us, but we remained calm.

Hangzhou (ANTARA) – Indonesia broke China’s dominance to win gold in the men’s 1,000-meter dragon boat race at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, on Friday.Maizir Riyondra and his team finished the race with a record of 4 minutes and 31.135 seconds.

Indonesia was in fifth place after the first 250 meters of the race, but the team managed to power through and move up to second place behind team China, which had led for the first half of the race.

In the last 500 meters of the race, Indonesia slowly but surely narrowed the gap on the home team. The Indonesian rowers finished the race 0.047 seconds ahead of China.

Myanmar took the bronze with a time of 4 minutes and 32.959 seconds.

This was the only gold medal won by the Indonesian dragon boat team in the six events it contested at the Games. China dominated the competition with five golds.

“We tried not to be provoked at the beginning of the race because our competitor, China, is very strong. They tried to test us, but we remained calm,” one of the Indonesian rowers, Anwar, said after the race.

Earlier on Wednesday (October 4), Indonesia secured a silver medal in the women’s 200m dragon boat event, and a bronze in the men’s 200m.

On Thursday (October 5), Indonesia took home two silver medals in the men’s and women’s 500m events.

The Indonesian dragon boat team logged a lackluster performance at the 2018 Asian Games, when they failed to bring back any gold medals.

Cyber security: technology and skills at the heart of Cybertech Europe, Leonardo SpA presents new industrial plan ready for 2024

ROME, Oct. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Technology, skills, education, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, defence, critical infrastructure, Space and data protection. These are the themes that fuelled Cybertech Europe 2023, organised in partnership with Leonardo SpA.

Leonardo announced its new industrial plan is set to be ready by the beginning of 2024. As CEO and former Minister of Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani stated, this plan will rest on two pillars: Space and cyber security.

Cybertech Europe has reached its sixth edition and is primarily dedicated to cyber security. The event, hosted at the Convention Center La Nuvola in Rome, in the EUR neighbourhood, on October 3–4, brought together leading international experts, representatives from institutions, academia, and the business world. This sector is experiencing rapid growth and, in Italy alone, with a market increase of 18% per year.

Leonardo’s plan will be unveiled in the new year. Cingolani explained the spirit that will drive it, highlighting two main aspects. On the one hand, there is the concept of security, which integrates into the present and projects into the future: products, from now on, will have to be designed with this sensitivity right from the outset, starting with the design phase. On the other hand, there is the Space chapter, dealing with satellite management, the internet, and the enormous amount of data that will need protection, travelling above our heads.

“The new industrial plan, which I can’t reveal too much about,” Cingolani noted, “will have two pillars of innovation. First, cyber security understood as a new platform that allows us to design any Leonardo product as ‘cyber secure by design,’ meaning cyber security is incorporated from the design phase and not added after having designed the helicopter or plane. The second pillar will be Space because, as you’ve understood, much of what is now the internet will be via satellite. Space will generate an infinite amount of data that also needs protection.” This will complement the, “traditional core business: aircraft, helicopters, and electronics, to be enhanced with artificial intelligence and digitalisation.”

According to Andrea Campora, Managing Director of the Cyber and Security Solutions Division at Leonardo, “Cyber security is a global ecosystem. The hybrid threats of the past two years have demonstrated the need for a systematic and cooperative response. We have been saying this for ten years, but finally, we are starting to see these responses on a strategic, technological, practical, and organisational level.”

Lastly, Cingolani touched on two points: the operability of the pan-European virtual centre for cyber risk management, which is, “a first step in a strategy that should consolidate in the coming years at the European level,” and the relationship, described as “science fiction” and “false” when portrayed as adversarial, between artificial intelligence and humans.

Edison celebrates 140 years and plans to invest €10 billion in ecological transition by 2030

Edison celebrates 140 years and plans to invest €10 billion in ecological transition by 2030

MILAN, Italy, Oct. 05, 2023 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Edison marks 140 years in business this year and unveils its development strategy for 2030, with goals extending to 2040, aimed at “strengthening its commitment to ecological transition in support of its customers and the safety and autonomy of the national energy system.” The energy group, led by CEO Nicola Monti, intends to accelerate Italy’s path towards energy transition through a plan that entails investments of €10 billion between 2023 and 2030, with 85% of these investments aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Approximately €5 billion will be allocated to renewables, €1 billion to flexibility systems, €2.5 billion to energy services for decarbonising consumption, and €1-2 billion to gas sector activities and expanding the customer portfolio. Edison’s plan aims to double EBITDA by 2030, reaching a range of €2 to €2.2 billion compared to €1.1 billion achieved in 2022. According to top management, this goal will be achieved through a significant transformation of the industrial portfolio, with activities having zero or near-zero direct emissions accounting for 70% of EBITDA, compared to the three-year average of 35%.

Edison also intends to maintain its key role in the country’s energy security and autonomy, with a flexible and increasingly decarbonised gas portfolio, thanks to green gases like hydrogen and biomethane. The goal for 2030 is to continue to meet 20% of Italy’s gas demand with green gases, which will account for around 5% of the portfolio.

Among the announcements made during Wednesday’s press conference at the Milan headquarters, CEO Monti talked about hiring plans: “We expect to hire an average of around 300 people per year until 2030.” Monti then focused on Edison’s role: “140 years ago, we initiated the electrification process in the country and ushered in a new era. Today, we are a leader in the energy transition, and our history of pioneering has accustomed us to responsibly contribute to the country’s future to ensure the safety, stability, and autonomy of the national energy system.” “This,” Monti continued, “means always looking ahead and making courageous choices today. That’s why Edison continues to invest in innovation to create new Italian and European value chains in the ecological transition.”

The company is also betting on new technologies. According to Edison, “nuclear energy is one of the lowest CO2-emitting generation sources, ensures minimal land consumption compared to installed electric power, and allows for optimal production scheduling.” The ambition, it stresses, is “to develop new nuclear power, if the conditions are created for its return to Italy. In particular, Edison aims to launch two 340 MW nuclear power plants with SMR technology between 2030 and 2040, leveraging the technological expertise of shareholder EDF.”
